My name is Maria and I run Birthing with Confidence, I am a mum to 4 wild ones and have a deep passion for supporting families as they begin and continue their journey into parenthood. These times in life are precious so why not do all you can to feel calm and confident. Dad's who feel they may lack direction and confidence during childbirth benefit greatly from the Gentlebirth workshops and feel completely confident to support mum. Reflexology can be done throughout pregnancy as often as mum enjoys. It can be beneficial for morning sickness, nausea, heart burn, swollen feet, anxiety and much much more. Fertility Reflexology is normally done for 12 weeks and if possible partner will attend the consultation and have separate sessions. What is Reiki?

To begin with Reiki is not affiliated with any religion or practice.
It is a spiritual/energetic healing technique with its roots in Japan.

The direct translation is :
REI - Universal life
KI - Energy

Our Energy should be strong and free flowing. When energy becomes depleted or blocked it can lead to symptoms of physical and/or emotional imbalance.

Reiki can help ease tension & stress and helps support the body in physical,mental and emotional healing. We go through the different energy chakra centres, bring these into balance and send energy to places where it is needed.

The treatment itself is mostly non contact but brings you into a deep relaxed state. It's subtle, effective and pleasant.

Truth is that everyone has the ability to tune in to their own healing energy and use it to strengthen themselves.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Personally, it reminds me of the honeymoon stage in relationships..... you talk about how wonderful it is, telling everyone who will listen, it can do no wrong and we can never get enough. ๐Ÿ’•
Besides my weird emotional attachment to vitamins ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป their role is paramount to a healthy immune system.

Now more than ever when there is massive fear around contracting Covid 19 we need to be active in keeping our immune system up and equally staying out of fear.

Fear = Stress
Stress= physiological chemical reactions which deplete our Vit C stores = more vulnerable to viral bacterial infections.

๐ŸŒ™White blood cells actively seek and transport Vit C to damaged tissue and require it for making cells that destroy and ingest bacteria & other invaders.๐ŸŒ™Vit C strengthens connective tissue which increases resistance to viral invasion.
๐ŸŒ™Vit C contributes to the development of antibodies and neutralization of toxins when building natural immunity to infections and diseases.
๐ŸŒ™It's probably the most important chemical for dealing with stress whether that be of a physical, chemical or psychological origin.

Unless we are eating a Vitamin rich diet as well as supplementing then the majority of us probably are deficient. Bleeding or receding gums, nose bleeds, easy bruising, slow wound healing, red pimples and lack of energy are symptoms of ascorbic acid deficiency.
The RDA recommendations only advise enough to keep us disease free.
It's much like having enough food so we don't starve but not enough so we thrive.
The dosage will be dependant on our individual make up and particular needs (if we are fighting infection, keeping immune system up etc)

Just to add that the older we are the more vit c we need spaced out in small amounts throughout the day.

There is strong evidence between changes in hormones during pregnancy & in the postpartum period and changes in brain health.
All these complex changes provide support for brain plasticity which is the brains ability to undergo structural and physiological changes.

Okay thats great but whats that got to do with me and my baby?!

Well.....

With these hormonal and brain changes it gives our brain the ability to create new connections between our neurons.
Rewiring our brains essentially.

Positive self talk helps to make sure we our sending our brain the right messages so we can take advantage of this re learning....
Please repeat to yourself:

๐ŸŒ™I am doing a great job.
๐ŸŒ™I am the perfect mother for my baby.
๐ŸŒ™Even when im feeling overwhelmed I know that I am fully capable of making the right decisions for me and my baby.

This helps new mothers not only have that laser like motherly instinct but helps build self efficacy which is a self belief in your capacity as a parent.
It also promotes a positive mother and infant bond.

We don't get a manual on how to be the perfect parent.....whatever the hell a perfect parent is ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป

Instead we get these very strong primal instincts to protect our babies combined with an intense love that makes us want best and all the happiness for our little people.
And that's without reading anything!
You just need to trust yourself.

Please don't cloud your inner knowing with self doubt or trying to do it all.
No one gets it 100% everyday.

(I have 4 so I speak from experience ๐Ÿ˜…!)

There is no perfect but there is good enough and that is all they need.

20th of July cannot come quick enough but I am glad of the time to be as prepared as possible under the new safety measures.

Still a few weeks to go but the bookings are pouring in. I am so grateful to all my clients who continue to support my practice and are sharing their excitement to get back into the therapy room for some serious R&R ๐Ÿ’–

For most of us loving our bodies has never been an easy task.

Since I was a child I remember the focus of my beauty being how I looked and as I got older....yep it was still who I was aesthetically.
I'm sure the story is the same for a lot of us.
I don't believe people gave us these compliments so down the road we would feel like s**t when we didn't fit into society's bulls**t beauty expectation
But......
What if we were told
'Hey you, your creativity is beautiful.'
Or
'Hey, your love for adventure is beautiful'
'The way you have overcome all that you have is incredible, it's bloody beautiful'
'Do you know that sparkle you get in your eyes when you speak about something you love, my god that is beautiful'
' You are a beautiful person'.

I know how we view ourselves would be vastly different.

Wait, let's not forget how society has our minds warped.
Beauty is defined & portrayed by what our bodies look like, how sexy we are, how attractive we are to others.......Where are the masses shouting a big 'Go F@ Yourself '.

All these stories we have been sold are just not true.....they are damaging & relentless.

So as an experiment, keep an ear out for this inner critic feeding you a whole lot of BS.

It may sound like:
*You are so fat
*You look horrible
*You've no b***s, you look like a man
*why can't I look like them
*what is wrong with me etc etc etc

Respond to it with a big F@ you or like you would to someone you love who was saying these things.
Could you imagine your friend,sister or daughter saying these things.....youd be right in there reminding them of all their beauty.
Be your own friend ๐Ÿ’ž
We are not pictures to be looked at.
Our bodies are meant to move, to dance, to run,to play, to do kickboxing, ballet whatever the hell it is that brings joy to you.

So if your body has changed a bit over quarantine.....So what!!

Is your body still capable of doing things you love?
Are you able to eat foods that nourish your body?
Are you able to get up and keep going when days are hard?
Are you the reason someone else smiles?
Are you doing the best you can?

5 Things you should never worry about when going for a massage.๐Ÿ’†๐Ÿฝ

From my experience,there are a few reoccurring themes when it comes to what the female population worry about when going for a massage.......so I'm just going to go right ahead and put your mind at ease.

1. Please don't worry and definitely don't apologise for not having silky smooth legs.
You do not need to shave before you come for a massage.
It's my job to release tension in your muscles & body, to help you relax the body & mind as well as to alleviate pain caused by tight muscles not to make sure you leave with a referral to a waxing salon!!
I don't care! It's 2020, who even shaves anymore anyway ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜…

2. Your size, scars on your body or anything that makes you feel self-conscious.
You don't have to tell me that you need to lose or gain a few pounds or explain what the scars are if it isn't relevant to your medical history.
People see beauty in you even if you cant.
Getting a massage is great for self esteem too.

3. Emotional Releases. Occasionally during a massage there can be a emotional release.
Yup, people can have a cry.....its totally okay & welcome. We understand that these kind of releases are needed and beneficial.
It is a safe place for you to relax and unwind ๐Ÿ’ž

4. Confidentiality.....100%!
What you share with me is private. I swear I will not be tweeting about it after!
In all seriousness, I am always so grateful how open my clients are with me. Confidentiality & privacy are a guarantee.

5. Falling Asleep.
This can actually be of extra benefit during a massage or holistic treatment. If we are in such a relaxed that we drift off, we won't have our mind going 90 causing us stress so less of the stress hormone and more of the positive ones like endorphins, dopamine & serotonin which also help reduce anxiety after the treatment.
It's rare that people snore but if they do, it adds wonderful harmonies to the music!

Who has days where they feel they could do a marathon (with little to no training, yep that's me๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ™ˆ)
And a few days later feel that their bodies weren't meant for exercise,it just isn't in them or they're better off clapping in the sidelines. (Also me๐Ÿ˜…)
Our menstrual cycle & fluctuating hormones play a big role in our physical ability and mindset.

๐ŸŒ™Menstrual Phase
Day 1 of your period/bleed is the beginning of your menstrual cycle .
Estrogen & Progesterone & LH are at their lowest so your energy may be too. Do Restorative yoga, gentle walking or lighter weights with more rest inbetween sets.

Lower estrogen levels can also make you more prone to injuries so stretching and doing mobility exercises are a must in this phase.

๐ŸŒ™The Follicular phase:
The menstrual bleeding stops and hormone levels being to rise with estrogen gradually peaking at the end of this phase.
The increase of these hormones effect the brain in a positive way leaving us feeling more creative and open to new experiences.
This is the time to start that new fitness class or gym programme!

๐ŸŒ™Ovulation:
Estrogen, FSH & OH all peak during the ovulation phase which makes sense as our energy levels peak. We will feel amazing, vibrant and able to conquer anything!

Now is the time to beat your records and push yourself harder. High intensity exercises.....we are coming for you!

๐ŸŒ™Then we jump into our Luteal Phase.
Esteogen & Progesterone reach their luteal peak on the middle of this phase and then dip as you move towards the end of the cycle.

During the 1st half of this phase you may still be feeling good so vigorous exercises & high intensity training are good here.
Listen to your body here.

In the 2nd half of this phase the hormonal ups & downs may leave you feeling sluggish. PMS lurks around about now and our inner critic game is strong.

This is when we need to rest & retreat. Light exercises, yoga and tai chi work great here.
Mindfulness is especially beneficial when all those negative Intrusive thoughts come in.
We need to listen to our bodies during the different phases of our cycle ๐Ÿ’•

Postpartum Depression has nearly tripled during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The study was relatively small with 900 pregnant women & women who recently gave birth involved but I've no doubt that the results of thousands would have been similar.
Pior to covid 19 postpartum/postnatal depression was still very much alive with at least 1 in 5 experiencing PPD.
With the massive surge of anxiety, uncertainty & fear as well as being isolated from our families,friend's and not having a little bit of time alone to breath, it's no surprise our mental health has suffered. ๐ŸŒ™The much needed connection from those who give us energy, reassurance, big belly laughs and a place where we can just be hasn't been accessible and it has been tragic.
Ppd can make it harder to do the zoom calls or FaceTime.
When you are in that space the last thing you want is to pretend to be okay, to smile and attempt to hold it together.
It's a numbing/fragile place to be. ๐ŸŒ™We spend more time on our phones - comparing ourselves to these illusions of mothers who have all their s**t together who somehow fit into their pre pregnancy jeans after a few weeks of giving birth and seem so happy with life....and while I wish that for everyone, these are illusions.
Please turn that s**t off ๐Ÿ™ˆ Consume all that makes you feel like a worthy, important, beautiful, intelligent badass. ๐ŸŒ™Hormones.....yep,these goddamn hormones again. This is important, nourish your body. Healthy fats are needed for hormonal/ brain health. ๐ŸŒ™ There are many different paths to improving your mental health.
You can speak to your gp about medication.
Speak to a therapist or counsellor. (Available in , some at a reduced rate if needed) This helped me tremendously.
Ask/accept support.
Make plans to uplift you and remind you of all that you are.
It's so true when they say it takes a village to raise a child. Whether that is physical help with the baby or emotional/mental support for the mother.
Many of us have walked this path and it's beyond awful but I promise it can get better.
You are good enough.
You deserve to feel good ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•

We can all have a joke about it now and then but when we are in it there isn't anything funny going on at all.

The pain & discomfort are real.
The anxiety, low moods & mood swings are real.
The fatigue,irritability & headaches are real.
The fluid retention, bloating and tender/swollen breasts are real.

Whether you experience one of these symptoms or several, it can be difficult to function properly.

Our cycles can tell us a lot about the health of our bodies and if we are in mental or emotional stress. Our cycles are regulated by our hormones.

Using Reflexology to support people with PMS can be very beneficial.
Working the endocrine system helps to balance hormones aiding in alleviating these unwanted symptoms.
