We had the pleasure of working with a fantastic new group sampling hospitality skills, and it’s safe to say it was a brilliant experience all round.

Participants gained their HACCP certification, adding a valuable qualification to their CV while also building real confidence for working in the hospitality sector.

Supermarket Recalls: Check Your Fridge Before Dinner this week.

If your weekly shop is sitting quietly in the fridge, it might not be as harmless as it looks.

This week, several everyday food items have been pulled from supermarket shelves over safety concerns—and yes, some of them could already be in your kitchen.

What’s Been Pulled

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has flagged a mix of products, including chicken, pasta, and desserts.

These weren’t tucked away in obscure shops either—they were sold in major retailers like Lidl and Tesco.

What You Should Do

Start with a quick scan of your fridge, freezer, and cupboards. If you spot any of the affected items, don’t take chances.

You’ve got two options:

1.⁠ ⁠Bring it back to the store for a refund (no receipt needed)
2.⁠ ⁠Throw them out - don’t chance them

Retailers have already put up notices, but let’s be honest—not everyone reads these.

A batch of 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐬 has been found to contain 𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐩𝐡𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐝𝐞 which is not correctly declared on the label.

In the food world, it’s the ultimate “frenemy.” It’s a preservative (E220–E228) that keeps your wine clear and your dried fruit from looking like a shrivelled sock. But for some people, it’s a total party crasher.

• The Reaction: It releases a gas that irritates a person’s airways, causing wheezing or “tightness.”
• If you have asthma, listen up. You’re the most likely to react. It can also trigger hives or even anaphylaxis in rare cases.
• The Rules: By law, if a product contains more than 10mg/kg or 10mg/L, it must be highlighted in bold on the label.
