Olive oil is a staple ingredient worldwide, but it comes with a hidden environmental cost - its production generates a thick, toxic sludge known as pomace, which pollutes soil and groundwater and is notoriously hard to dispose of.
Now, Israeli startup PhenOlives, based at Kibbutz Reshafim, has developed technology that transforms this waste into valuable products - turning one of agriculture’s dirtiest outputs into a model of circular innovation.
PhenOlives’ patented system uses 100% of the waste stream, processing it on-site within minutes and converting it into three useful products: a sustainable biopolymer (plastic alternative) made from olive pits; a gluten-free olive flour rich in fibre; and purified water enriched with a concentrated antioxidant extract.
Instead of dumping pollution, olive mills can now create food, materials, and clean water - a win for both industry and the environment.
