November 14th is World Diabetes Day so let's talk all about Diabetes and it's impact on our feet.

Most people know that Diabetes has an impact on your feet but do you actually know what to look out for and what this really means for your foot health?

Diabetes impacts our feet in 2 main ways:
1) if our blood sugars are regularly high our nerve endings become damaged leading to neuropathy. This affects the foot in 3 ways - sensation is reduced, the foot can change shape and the feet become drier and less moisturised

2) Diabetes can really affect our blood flow. The blood vessels bringing blood down to our feet can become calcified (or hardened) meaning the blood flow can really struggle to get down to our lower limb. This can really delay our healing abilities

These 2 things combined together can quickly lead to a recipe for disaster as first of all the skin integrity is poorer, the foot shape can be more prone to irritation from footwear and our pain signals aren't functioning to alert us to any issues. Cuts or grazes therefore can become a portal of entry for bacteria and our body due to the reduced blood flow can not heal the area in time and infection can ensue.

So how do you care for your feet when you have diabetes?

👣Keep your blood sugars stable
👣Take your medication as prescribed
👣Attend all your check ups
👣Check your feet regularly - hold them up to a mirror if you can not see them yourself
👣Moisturise your feet regularly - apply cream all over the foot but never inbetween the toes
👣Wear correctly fitting shoes
👣Don't walk barefoot
👣If you notice anything unusual then clean it, cover it and bring it to the attention of your healthcare professional
👣Attend your Podiatrist at least once a year
👣Quit smoking

An incredible performance from Longford's own Cian McPhillips in Tokyo 👏

THE PRIDE OF LONGFORD

Congratulations to Cian McPhillips on setting an incredible Irish record of 1:42.15 in the World Championships 800m Final in Tokyo. The Ardagh, Longford and UCD athlete raised the spirits of a county and nation and his supreme effort in Japan saw him heartbreakingly miss out by 0.2 of a second on a world medal, being pipped by three Olympic medallists. A new star has certainly announced himself on the world stage.
