Helen’s Farm - an insight into life on her farm

‘As we enter into spring, calving has been going well, with the majority of heifers calved. The cows are coming into milk well, with low SCC and good quality. The challenge is still full tanks and wet ground. This last few days of sun has been great, but with an unsettled picture of weather in the forecast, this spring is looking challenging.’

We carried out a Slake Test Demo at Norman and Michael Dunne's Farm as part of the Introduction to soils and biological agriculture course run by NOTS

It is a great visual demonstrating that farmers adopting certain biological, conservation, and regenerative farm practices can deliver on behalf of nature and consumers.

The test simply demonstrated the improvement in soil structure due to Norman and Michael integrating these farm practices.

This demo shows that improving soil health, water stable soil aggregates, earth worm activity, soil microbiology, nutrient holding capacity, and organic matter can help us better deal with high rainfall events and keep soil and nutrients out of our water courses

Helen’s Farm - a snapshot of life on the farm with Helen Sinton!

* Calves have started to hit the ground at the end of January, so there is plenty going on
* Cows are transitioning well and coming back into milk
* (Slurry ) tanks are reaching capacity, the ground is saturated and the weather still not letting up
* But better days are ahead, spring is approaching, and attention will soon turn to grass growth and nutrient planning

Helen had a great two days last week on a Trip to the Techna Premix factory outside Nantes in France.
She was also took part in poultry training on techna products - Aviance, Avidry, Protical and Gallicalm as well as a more indepth look into feed and carcass efficiency.

It was great to be on Karl Colton’s farm today for the official launch by Base Ireland of their EIP project on regenerative agriculture.

This project seeks to understand the farming practices being implemented by regenerative farmers across Ireland, and crucially what these practices mean for Biodiversity and farm finances. The project is a European Innovation Partnership that will also examine why farmers choose regenerative agriculture, and will explore if this soil-first farming approach is the step-change needed to create a new baseline, and a more resilient future for Irish Agriculture.

A huge well done to Base Ireland and the Department of Agriculture for this initiative and we wish them the very best with it
