Sometimes when a child says “I don’t know” when you ask how they feel… they genuinely mean it.

Some children feel emotions very strongly, but don’t yet have the words to describe what’s going on inside.

So instead, it might look like:
✨Big reactions that seem to come out of nowhere
✨Frustration over small things
✨Shutting down or avoiding the question altogether

This is often linked to something called alexithymia — a difficulty with understanding and expressing emotions.
It’s not that your child doesn’t want to tell you how they feel.

They’re still learning how to figure it out themselves.

What helps most isn’t pressure, but support:
✨ gently naming emotions for them
✨ keeping language simple
✨ helping them connect feelings to what’s happening in their body

Over time, this builds the skills they need to understand and express their emotions more clearly 💛

A lot of the children I see for anxiety… aren’t just anxious.

In my sessions, kids often come in for anxiety support. But over time, it becomes clear there’s something more going on underneath — not because it was missed on purpose, but because it doesn’t always look the way people expect.

These are the kids who:

- Join in socially, but it takes a lot of effort
- Put huge pressure on themselves to get things “right”
- Take things very literally
- Stick closely to what feels familiar
- Hold it together all day at school… then fall apart at home

It’s easy to label this as “just anxiety,” behaviour issues, or quirky traits.
But when you understand what’s really happening, your whole approach changes — and that’s when real progress starts to click into place.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone 🤍
Drop a ❤️ or comment “THIS” if you see your child in this. Save this post and share it with a parent or teacher who might need it.

Most parents aren’t short on advice.
They’re short on what to actually do in the moment.

When frustration builds, when behaviour escalates, when everything starts to unravel…
that’s where this kit comes in.
The Busy Brains Calm Kit isn’t just a collection of tools.

It’s a clear, practical way to support your child through real-life situations — at home, in school, or on the go.

Inside, you’ll find:
• 8 Therapist-designed tools
• Coping cards with simple, usable strategies
• A parent guide to help you respond with clarity and consistency

Because emotional regulation isn’t built from being told what to do…
it’s built from being shown how to do it.

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking
“I know what I should say… but it’s not working”— this is for you.

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. It affects how people experience, interact with, and relate to the world around them. Autism affects people differently – which is why there’s a common saying: “If you’ve met one Autistic person, you’ve met one Autistic person.”

Autistic people have different experiences and need different levels of support.

There are many misunderstandings about autism that can be harmful, and these can make it harder for Autistic people to access the support they need.

Here are some facts about autism that are often misunderstood:
🧠 Most Autistic people want to make friends, though some may find this difficult.
🧠 Autistic people experience the same range of emotions as other people, they may just express them differently.
🧠 Autism is defined by differences in social communication and behaviours, not intelligence. Intellectual disability or high intelligence may co occur with autism.
🧠 There is no cure for autism, but Autistic people can develop skills for life with the right support.

Autistic people have great strengths which should be celebrated. These include:
🧠 Noticing patterns, details, or inconsistencies that others may miss.
🧠 Deep focus and persistence, particularly when working on areas of interest.
🧠 Honesty, integrity, and direct communication, which can support trust and clarity in relationships.

Big feelings do not wait for the therapy room 🤍

The Busy Brains Coping Toolbox was created to help coping skills travel into real life.

This is the kind of support I have often wished I could hand to parents after sessions. Something practical to bring home, so the same skills we work on in therapy can be used in the moments they are actually needed most.

Whether that is co-regulation through frustration, easing anxiety around going into school, supporting transitions, or helping a child through overwhelm, this toolbox was designed from real need and real experience.

It supports behavioural and emotional regulation, builds coping skills, and gives parents practical tools to use at home, at school, and on the go.

Regulation isn’t taught first.
It’s borrowed.

Children don’t learn how to calm themselves from instructions, consequences, or being told what to do differently.

They learn it through experience.
Through repeated moments of someone else holding steady when they can’t.

Through a nervous system that doesn’t escalate with theirs.

Through feeling what calm actually feels like in their body.

That’s how regulation develops.

Not by being told to “use your strategies” in the middle of overwhelm
—but by having enough experiences of co-regulation that those patterns start to internalise.

What looks like “they should know this by now”
is often just a child who hasn’t had enough moments of borrowed calm yet.
