Hypnosis is all around you!
As a hypnotherapist, I recognise it everywhere. It's advertising. It's politics. It's the news - usually bad news. And it's Blue Monday.
Yes, we were told in the lead up to yesterday that it was 'the most depressing Monday/day of the year'.
It's nothing more than a suggestion - which is what hypnosis is all about, of course - suggestion.
What does this do to the way we think? It's pure fear mongering, just like the news headlines. Just like advertising is showing us all the things we DON'T have and convincing us that we NEED.
And on Blue Monday, it's all of that, rolled into one. Suggestion that it's a terrible day, and suggestion (advertising in the form of numerous emails and social media posts) that we need to buy something to cheer ourselves up, and we can do that with a lovely little discount. It's a strategy.
What was 'blue Monday' like for you? Maybe it was a bad day, maybe not. If it was, were you leading up to it expecting it to be bad, because you were told it would be? Did you pick up on all the things that went wrong instead of all the things that went right?
This brings me back to our reticular activating system. What you're expecting, you'll notice. What you're looking for, you'll find. What you focus on, you'll see more of.
OK, if it was genuinely a rubbish day as some days can be, fair enough. But next time it comes around, ignore the suggestions and reminders everywhere that that particular Monday in January is going to be awful.
Look around you today and see if you can find other things that are just suggestion. It could be a passing comment from someone, a fleeting criticism from a colleague, or a lovely compliment from a stranger. Either way, notice how these things make you feel and how just the mere suggestion of it has a big impact! Then remind yourself, 'it's just a suggestion. I get to choose if I accept it or not.'
What can you do to bring positive suggestion into your world or someone else's?
