“Listening to familiar songs can trigger memories. But the emotions churned up by these memories can be quite painful, carrying with them the aftershocks of trauma.”

Music Therapists are trained in the necessary therapeutic skills to safely process difficult emotions or memories triggered by music and to support the client in healing. This is why, when considering music as part of an individual’s care plan, seeking the advice and expertise of a music therapist is invaluable.

In a powerful piece by music therapist Dean Olsher, he recalls his work with Marian, an older lady living with Alzheimers. Olsher describes how Music Therapy offered Marian a medium through which she could process trauma and highlights the importance of music therapy input in care settings.

IACAT Symposium: 24th April
Another of our afternoon workshops will be facilitated by Chiara Clear and Marika O'Sullivan

Chiara Clear is a registered music therapist (RMT) with both AMTA and IACAT. Chiara completed her MA in Music Therapy in 2016 at the University of Melbourne. Chiara has worked extensively in acute and community adult mental health, aged care, palliative care and adult disability.
Chiara also has an extensive background in performance and recording; having worked in music industry settings in Australia, Ireland and internationally. Chiara has recently returned to live in Co. Wicklow with her family and she is currently working in frontline disability services in a response to the current pandemic. Chiara hopes to establish herself in both community and private practice in the near future.

Marika O’Sullivan is an artist and art therapist and has always been inspired by colour and the regenerational properties of expressive art making. Music also plays a big part in her life, as does movement, and she is looking forward to co facilitating this workshop of sound and colour with Chiara at the IACAT symposium.
