Let’s Talk Verrucae, Especially in Teenagers!
This week I treated a teenager who came in with a foot full of verrucae, and it reminded me how common (and often overlooked) this condition really is, especially in young people.
Verrucae are viral skin lesions caused by the HPV virus. They thrive in warm, moist environments like changing rooms, swimming pools, gym floors and school locker rooms. which makes teenagers particularly at risk.
Many people feel embarrassed, but there’s absolutely no need. Verrucae are incredibly common, and the sooner they're treated, the easier they are to manage.
Here’s what everyone should know:
✨ Verrucae can spread across your own foot and to others.
✨ They often look like small cauliflower textured patches or clusters (“mosaic verrucae”).
✨ They can become painful when walking, playing sports, or standing for long periods.
✨ Over the counter treatments rarely work for deep or multiple lesions.
✨ A Foot Health Practitioner can assess, diagnose, and tailor the right treatment plan.
If you or your teen has a stubborn verruca (or several), don’t ignore it.
Early, professional treatment prevents spreading, reduces discomfort, and gets you back to normal activity faster.
If you’d like help or aren’t sure whether it's a verruca, you can always book a consultation. I’m here to support you every step of the way. 💚
