Fallen arches, often called flat feet, happen when the inner arch of the foot lowers or collapses when standing or walking. For some people this causes no issues, but for others it can lead to foot, ankle, knee, hip, or even lower-back pain due to changes in alignment.
Flat feet can be flexible (the arch appears off-weight) or rigid (always flat). Common contributing factors include muscle weakness, tendon strain, genetics, injury, or long periods in unsupportive footwear.
π‘ The good news: physical therapy is often very effective. Strengthening the foot and ankle, improving flexibility, and retraining movement can significantly reduce pain and improve function. Osteopathy can also help as a supportive approach by addressing joint mobility and whole-body mechanics, especially when combined with active exercise.
If pain is persistent, worsening, or affecting daily life, itβs worth getting assessed. Understanding whatβs happening is the first step toward feeling better π£
