For a Mother to find her comfortable position in labour is very important not just for her but for her baby to find the space to turn. I attended a study day in Waterford recently on the use of peanut balls in labour, from bigger balls to small ones! with the amazing peanut midwife alongside my wonderful colleague .emm

These active study days keep us up to date on the research on supporting Mothers through the labour process. I learned alot more layers today!
For me using the 'fire hydrant' (see pic above) is one position I use at homebirth settings. In the hospital setting smaller peanut balls are used to support Moms having an epidural to help support baby's rotation.

I definitely will be using a more of these peanut balls more in my homebirth practice when needed. When we know where baby is in the pelvis we can help baby along by releasing and softening pelvic muscles. Mother also feels supported and a part of her active labour process as she understands the reasoning behind them.

And did you know that use of peanut balls in labour has been found to reduce labour time by an average of 82 mins in the 1st stage of labour and 8 mins average in the 2nd stage.

Also so wonderful to meet midwives from Waterfird, wexford and St lukes in kilkenny, all with a keen interest to support labouring Mothers.

Had the most wonderful weekend outside Portlaoise facilitating a hypnobirthing/Mindfulness course to new parents and a few.. not so new parents 🥰 but these parents came as they wanted to be more resourced than last time.

The space felt calm and nurturing for the inner explorations we did.

Meditation is essential as we all know labour is an altered state where we transcend the regular of everyday life for this sacred rite of passage.

With practice and knowledge we gift ourselves these resources and effective coping strategies. So I feel privileged and consider it a gift to to teach this beautiful modality to help mothers and partners UNDERSTAND birth and give them resources and tools to support themselves on every potential outcome..

I loved witnessing those "light bulb moments" as parents realised that yes they do have choices and a voice in their own birth journey.

Weekends like this remind me how powerful knowledge, support and mindful preparation can be in shaping positive beginnings for new parents and babies.

There is so much to this photo that I ❤️ love.

My wonderful client Caoimhe on day of discharge managing to and take a photo at the same time! Their gift to me in appreciation of my care a 🐝 how about that! So much in common as we have a mutual appreciation of the Irish Honey bee!

Such a great family, honoured to have been part of their journey..from trauma to transformation and celebration. This is what 'continuity of care' the midwifery model of care offers and in the evidence based research is the gold standard of care to prepare parents for parenthood. This pathway is trauma informed and evidence based.
So why is this care not standard care in our hospitals for all our mothers?

This pregnancy and subsequent homebirth with me has been a very cathartic and empowering experience for this new family. Out of trauma came integration to transformation to celebration.

When we honour birth as a portal of transformation we honour families stepping in to their deepest strength and when we empower families we shape generations to come.
