to all you great peeps!

Pretty sure mostly everyone will know who the woman on the left is, but anyone know the woman on the right?

To the left we have Marie Curie who received the Nobel prize for chemistry in 1911 and became the only woman to win the award in two different fields

And on the right we have Badass Barbara McClintock, who you might know if you're on my email list

(which if you aren't should definitely check out)

We can all feel like what we desire, is just outside our capability

Could be money reasons, prejudice or our own self imposed limitations

None of these stopped Barbara..

Growing up in early 1900s New York she was expected to settle down early with a man who could provide for her

Barbara chose a masters in botany and decided to never marry so she could focus on research

In the late 40's she challenged the concepts around genes when she discovered 'jumping genes'

To which she was met with a barrage of ignorance, skepticism & ridicule.. Cause it couldn't be observed

Fast forward to 83' when she was told in her lab, by her students she had won the Nobel Prize

To which she turned, said "That's nice" and reportedly went back to her research

She knew she was right, she knew she was right 35 years before, she didn't need the validation

She became then the first and only woman to be awarded the medicine prize unshared

Next time you think you can't do something, ask yourself how strongly do you believe that doubt?

And could that doubt be overcome?

I'm thankful to be able to take this learning from Barbara and all the meaningful women in my life.

Have a good day✌️

Ever wonder where the 10,000 steps a day mantra came from?

Turns out it was created as part of a Japanese marketing campaign to promote a pedometer at the time

But, is there any evidence to support this seemingly arbitrary amount of steps?

Turns out, researches at UMass, had the same question

They analysed 15 studies, including 50,000 participants in total, to identify the amount of steps which would optimally improve adults health and longevity of life.

They came out with some interesting findings and the Japanese marketers weren't too far off the mark!*

For adults over the age of 60, the risk of premature death stabilised at around 6,000-8,000 steps a day

Adults younger than 60 saw the risk of premature death stabilise between 8,000 and 10,000 deaths

Just moving a little can make a lot of difference.

My phone is a little busted, so enjoy this photo from X amount of years ago, I'm not really sure when.

Best of luck today to Port Rfc in their game against Athy!

*This may not seem as important, considering the old mantra of 10,000 steps a day, but it is really useful in establishing evidence based recommendations for simple, accessible physical activity like walking, which can be used as a stepping stone to more advanced movement.

There is so much information constantly being pushed to us online, it can be hard to know where to start

I certainly felt this when I was going through a difficult time with my own mental health

It only meant that it took me a longer time to reach out for help

Instead of reaching to the stars for change, how come we don't ask ourselves enough simple questions..

What is something you do everyday that you could do better?

What mundane part of your life, can you take aim at and do your best in?

I recommend your morning because I think many of us get set in a mood during it and don't change much throughout the day

Have a good Friday

One of the most uncomfortable parts about going through mental health decline is the uncertainty

Luckily, I've always had a support group of people who've made it easier

Something you have to do for yourself however is learn to work through your emotions, instead of running from them

But, that doesn't mean you can't get help along the way. Click the link to get a PDF on how you can begin to learn how to work through uncomfortable emotions!

Regaining your focus in a social media world📲

Yup, I recognise the irony

I don't believe you need to make drastic changes in your life to increase your focus

Some reflection over our everyday routines is all it takes

In what way can you add some stillness to your morning?

Mindfulness and Self-Hypnosis are both known to be able to aid with stress

These exercises can be carried out in a couple of minutes too

The only thing stopping most of us is pride and a reluctance to be a beginner at something again

The effectiveness of using Hypnosis to decrease IBS symptoms

Most people do not seek treatment for their irritable bowl syndrome. Yet it is something which can cause to considerable distress to someone.

In measuring symptoms like, quality of life, depression and anxiety researchers found scores significantly improved at follow up (PMID: 14570733).

With the beneficial effects lasting for at least 5 years, it is a great way of taking more control over your body and mind.

How To Care Less About What Others Think Of You👥

Use this two step approach to become more confident in being your authentic self

And if you don't want to do that, stick to the end of the video for a treat

Thank you for your attention and have a good day!

In today's email I pointed out that in my opinion, we place too much value on happiness and not enough in meaning

This may seem pointless, considering this video is on the basis for rewarding yourself, but please read on

Your values are going to form and cement your beliefs. Your beliefs about you, those around you and the world.

Based off of these beliefs, will come your actions and consequently habits

If you do not value or respect your body, for example, there is a higher chance of you destroying it with harmful food, drink, smoking etc. And lesser chance of you exercising or doing anything to enhance it.

Habits are but the building blocks to your idealised life. This idealised life trickles down from your values to your everyday life, to the decisions you make right now.

Yes, it's good to reward yourself each step of the way and not leave it all till the last second.

But if your priorities aren't straight how do you expect to change them at all.

Now that I've got your attention, let's talk about this new vaccine for obesity💉

It isn't really a vaccine, more of an injection to aid in pursuit of weight loss

The idea is being introduced in Great Britain and is causing a contentious conversation

On one side people are outraged that this "shortcut" is being introduced and that people should focus on educating themselves and creating lifestyle changes

On the other, there are people happy to see another tool being introduced, so that weight loss may become easier for those who are obese

The drug works by mimicking feelings of fullness and isn't readily available to anyone looking to go on a 2 week fad diet.

There is an inherent danger that this could become a crutch for those who do not address underlying psychological symptoms which is keeping people from building healthy sustainable habits, like eating correctly and regular exercise.

My point is that, these things are never as simple as they may seem. And it can be easy to get swayed by sensationalist news headlines, but to protect your own peace of mind you are best in forming your own opinion.

I believe this is a step in the right direction, what about you?

I touched on this topic this yesterday in my email, if you want to sign up to learn more in depth about mental health click on my page and you should see the link!

Comparison is the thief of joy🙅

Common phrase, one we all take for granted

Is there any way we can stop unfairly comparing ourselves to others?

A tip I learned years ago analysing media may be able to help

It is the difference between active and passive engagement

Do you know which you are? Learning to develop this skill with social media and watching the news can help to minimise them feelings of anxiety

Giving you the tools with relaxation

Within the 1800's a surgeon named James Braid had a closer look at what was already known of hypnosis (which wasn't much). He became more interested in it because he believed the trance like state was like being asleep. In modern times clinical psychologists believe it is actually a focused psychological state - similar to meditating. The goal will be to get you into a state of focused relaxation, not "Hypnotised" I don't like using that word, has too many poor connotations in modern society.

What is known is that certain people are more and less susceptible. A defining factor in this is thought to be slight variations in brain anatomy. Under MRI surveillance found that those subjects easily hypnotised had a particularly bigger Rostrum than others differently affected. The Rostrum is related to attention in the brain. An EEG which researchers can use and monitor the electrical activity of your brain and see different patterns of brainwaves was used to show that hypnotherapy and those more likely/susceptible to hypnosis or going under deep meditative relaxation, (how I prefer to refer to it), leads to an increase in Theta waves which is linked to attention and physical attention. If you're interested in that have a look at a concept called Top - Down Processing, there's multiple examples and experiments you can check out like the Stroop test. That one in particular is in relation to a part of the extrastriate cortex a region of the brain responsible for decoding written code didn't become activated i.e meaning no conflict in a task previously thought to be difficult. That's all you need to know for now but if you'd like to continue reading I'm going to add a little bit of my own mindfulness as well.

It'll fall under the Law of Attraction which can be basically described by that everything that you perceive here in your physical environment is vibration, and the life you are living is your vibrational interpretation.

People believe that "asking" for something means "asking for something wanted". But by "asking", we mean offering a matching vibration. It is important to understand that you get what you think about, whether you want it or not. And chronic thoughts about unwanted things invite, or ask for, matching experiences.
