(Some) Flu figures. 2025/2026.

In the flu season 25/26 there were 282 deaths from flu. 259 were over 65 and 23 were under 65.
For this outgoing flu season there were 24,727 reported cases of flu.

Of the reported cases;
855 were under one,
3,044 between 1 and 4,
3,000 between 5 and 14,
5,846 between 15 and 44,
3,091 between 45 and 64,
4,636 between 65 and 79,
Over 80 there were 4,255 cases.

The number of hospitalizations with flu was 5,838.

Vaccination is the primary protection against severe illness and death from flu; with significant decrease seen after widespread vaccination.

Vaccination uptake for 25/26 was;
Over 60s…..66.4%
Children 2 to 17…..24.5%.
Healthcare workers…..34.5%
In 25/26 there were more deaths from flu (282) than from fatal traffic collisions. (190)

Between 2009 and 2019; 5,000 children were hospitalised with flu. During the same period 200 children were in intensive care with severe flu and 40 children died from flu.

Alcohol and pregnancy.

No alcohol at all is the safest when planning a pregnancy or when pregnant.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can
Increase the risk of stillbirth and miscarriage.
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to premature birth and possible low birth weight.
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to foetal defects in the heart and kidneys.
Foetal alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) can be caused by alcohol during pregnancy and it affects both brain and physical development.

The message is simple. As soon as you find out that you are pregnant stop taking any alcohol. If you are planning a pregnancy, stop taking alcohol.
Ireland has the third highest rate of FASD in the world.

Of course this is not an easy thing to do. For years there was the assumption that a glass or two will not do any harm. This is not true. It would help if your partner stays off alcohol during the pregnancy as well. This is to give support.

Other recreational drugs should also not be used during pregnancy. Consult your pharmacist, GP or nurse before you take any medication during pregnancy.

Children's nasal flu vaccine.

Between 2009 and 2019; 5,000 children were hospitalised with complications from flu. 200 were in intensive care and 40 died.
