Preparing for Life is an exciting new home visiting programme for expectant mothers in the Ballaghaderreen and surrounding areas.

Preparing for Life is a Home Visiting programme based the Ballaghaderreen and surrounds catchment area. The programme is open to pregnant women and with the mother’s consent, we will work with the family until the child is school ready. This is a free evidence-based programme that offers free developmental items at different stages. It is open to voluntary and universal referrals. As part of our ethos in Preparing for Life Ballaghaderreen we aim to empower and support women, children and families and the community to thrive by sharing information and building on the family’s strengths, recognising them as experts of their own lives.

As part of National Breastfeeding Week, Healthy Roscommon was delighted to be part of the launch of We're Breastfeeding Friendly Roscommon.

This initiative is designed to to help improve the health and wellbeing of breastfeeding mothers, babies and their families through the development and promotion of breastfeeding friendly businesses, public offices, organisations and communities.

It was a wonderful morning filled with positive stories of families feeling supported in their breastfeeding journey and learning about how we could go about supporting them further.

We were delighted to be joined by lots of mothers and their children and to hear the poetry of Therhymingone Maria Tempany, to round off a wonderful event.

We are calling on businesses and organisations around Roscommon to support this initiative to show they welcome and support breastfeeding mothers and families by some easy and low-cost actions.

Healthy Roscommon as part of the Community Development Team was delighted to be nominated for an Irish Climate Change Leadership Award on Friday night last.

This nomination was for the Community Development Team's response in the aftermath of Storm Eowyn. This response saw local authority, PPN, Community groups, public agencies and many more come together in a coordinated way to provide support over a three week period to people throughout the county impacted by extended power outages, communication disruptions and impacts on their wellbeing.

Based on the learning from this event we have worked on the development of a Community Resilience Toolkit for community groups across Roscommon. This toolkit is designed to empower communities to improve preparedness and thus foster resilience in recovery from emergencies within their areas and to ensure smooth communication and access to support should such emergencies occur.

While we didn't take away the award on the night it was great recognition of a truly mammoth collaborative effort to manage the crisis and to learn from the 41 hubs across the county who supported so many people affected. We look forward to launching the toolkit in the coming weeks and helping to improve preparedness across the county.

A lovely evening at King House for Boyle Family Resource Centre's Festival of Fun as part of Social Inclusion Week 2025.
I was delighted to showcase the Roscommon Period Dignity project, making period products available to all those in need of support across the county to prevent period poverty.
We had great engagement with those attending and are looking forward to the launch of the project this Wednesday at The Rural Youth Assembly.

Thank you to Boyle FRC for the invite and to The Period Fairies for helping to spread the word around the Festival this evening.

The evening ended perfectly with the launch of the first hot air balloon as part of the Irish Hot Air Ballooning Championships.
