Its hard to believe, but this image of a fragmented bronze calendar represents most of what we know about the Celtic way of measuring time. Called the Coligny Calendar after the region of France where it was found in 1897, it maps out a period of five years divided into months of between 29 and 30 days. Significantly it differs from most of the other calendars found from that period in the classical civilisations in one key respect - it is a lunar calendar, following the phases of the moon. Samhain - or Mid (month) Samoni in Gaulish, has a prominent position on the calendar and may have marked the start of the Celtic year

We will delve a little more into what has been learned from the Coligny calendar in our next couple of posts. This time leading up to and around Samhain is a magical time, if we allow ourselves permission to look beyond the surface level, we can uncover some profound truths about our connections to the more than human world.
