Happy Christmas to all our clients🎄

This year, instead of sending Christmas gifts or cards, we have made a generous donation to the Barnardos Christmas Appeal - every child deserves a happy Christmas.

We are grateful for the trust you place in us throughout the year and we hope this contribution helps support families who need it most during the festive season.

To find out more about how you can make a child’s Christmas, visit barnardos.ie/christmas.

Wishing you and your families a warm, peaceful and joyful Christmas,
from all the team at the Adult & Child Therapy Centre 💜✨

Welcome Dearbhaill Redington to the Clinic👋

We are pleased to share that Dearbhaill Redington, Psychotherapist (MSc P*P, IACP Member) will now be working from our clinic space on Mondays and Wednesdays, offering 1:1 psychotherapy sessions for adults.

Dearbhaill is a qualified psychotherapist who works from a pluralistic perspective, drawing on different therapeutic approaches to meet each client’s unique needs. She offers a compassionate and confidential space for adults (18+) to explore life’s challenges.

Her work supports individuals experiencing:

• Grief and loss
• Anxiety, depression and panic
• Self-harm and suicidal thoughts
• Low self-worth
• Relationship and family difficulties
• Trauma and workplace pressures

Many clients come to therapy during times of transition, such as adjusting to illness, navigating menopause, coping with bullying, or exploring personal growth.

Before qualifying as a psychotherapist, Dearbhaill spent over 20 years in corporate communications, where she developed deep listening skills and an understanding of complex human dynamics. These experiences enrich her therapeutic practice, helping her meet each client with clarity, compassion and respect for their story.

🎅 Sensory Santa is coming!

We’re creating calm, magical moments for our visitors this Christmas at Adult & Child Therapy Centre.

Our team has been busy preparing a very special Sensory Santa experience in our familiar, child-centred clinic space.

Here’s what makes it so meaningful:

🎄 Children can meet Santa in a calm, supportive environment tailored to their needs.

🎄 Our amazing Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists and Santa’s elves will be on hand to make the visit relaxed, joyful and truly magical.

🎄 Each family will have their own dedicated time, giving every child space to enjoy Santa at their own pace, with opportunities for some playtime in our therapy rooms too.

Behind the scenes, our team has been working hard:

🎨 Our OT Dama is painting a magical Christmas window to welcome families into the clinic.

📘 And our Speech Therapist Triona has created a beautiful Social Story that’s shared with all families attending, helping children feel prepared, supported and excited for their visit.

This is more than a Santa visit, it’s an inclusive, sensory-friendly Christmas experience created with care, intention and love. ❤️

We can’t wait to welcome our families on the 6th & 13th of December!

We are delighted to welcome Triona to our team this month.
Triona is looking forward to meeting her clients in the coming weeks in No 10.

Some children may not register sensory input as easily, which can make them appear constantly on the go or not fully aware of what’s happening around them.

Behaviours might include:
🤸 Appearing clumsy or unaware of their body in space
✋ Touching everything or mouthing objects
🔄 Constant fidgeting or movement (rocking, spinning, bumping into things)
📢 Speaking loudly or making repetitive noises
😅 Not noticing pain, temperature, or strong smells

Some kids may seem zoned out, slow, or unaware of their body. Quick sensory input can help them get ready for the day!

Try this before school:
• 🏋️ Heavy work: carry backpack, push/pull chores, bear crawls
• 🔄 Movement: jumping, spinning, swinging
• ✋ Tactile/oral: textured toys, crunchy/chewy snacks, rub their body to “wake up”
• 🎶 Auditory/visual: upbeat music, call-and-response games
• ✨ Combine senses: movement + heavy work + tactile for max alertness

Tips:
• Short, frequent bursts work best
• Watch what activates your child most
• Balance alerting with brief calm moments

Afterschool ideas could be:

🏃 Active play: obstacle courses, climbing, trampolines, swinging
💪 Proprioceptive input: carrying shopping bags, pushing/pulling activities, weighted vests
🌈 Tactile exploration: sand play, textured toys, finger painting
⚽ Interactive fun: scavenger hunts, ball games, dancing

✨ Every child is unique. An evaluation with an occupational therapist could give you more insight into your child’s sensory profile and the best ways to support them. Always remember the importance of a little time to unwind after school, it can make the rest of the day much smoother.

Some children react stronger to sensory input that most people tolerate well.

Behaviours might include:
👂 Covering ears at loud sounds (vacuum cleaner, fire alarm, noisy lunch hall)
🍽️ Avoiding certain food textures (slimy, crunchy, mixed textures)
👕 Refusing certain clothes (scratchy fabrics, tags, tight elastic)
🙅 Reacting strongly to touch (light touch, crowded spaces, handshakes)
🌟 Feeling overwhelmed in bright or busy environments

Afterschool ideas could be:
🛋️ Quiet corners or chill zones: beanbags, soft lighting, noise-cancelling headphones
👐 Calm sensory play: theraputty, water beads ( with adult supervision), kinetic sand
🧘 Gentle movement: yoga, stretching, balance games
🎨 Creative time: painting, colouring, sticker collages

✨ Every child has their own sensory profile. It could be helpful to have an evaluation with an occupational therapist for more tailored strategies. And don’t forget, after school is the perfect time to unwind before homework or family activities.
