Hello there. I know it’s been a awhile but some of you may still see this.

As many know, I downsized my PT business over the last 3 years to throw my efforts at building a technology company. The goal was to deliver the best available restaurant recipe creation app in the world & we got a long way toward delivering that.

Anyone who has used myFitnessPal & fretted over what to add when eating at a restaurant or hotel, I was doing it for you!

Throughout that journey I’ve learned a huge amount, in areas I had never even thought about, things usually left to the nerds. I recently departed that business as I wasn’t enough of a nerd to build the software & felt we still weren’t solving the real problem.

On Monday, I got invited to join Antler, Amsterdam. I’m both surprised & delighted. Antler is a ‘founder focused’ venture capital startup accelerator that is bringing 50+ diverse & talented individuals from all over the world, and 1 disagreeable Irishman! The goal is to discover huge business opportunities & then support them in building unicorns, billion solar businesses.

So, I think I’ll be right at home.

Starting May 13th I’ll be an expat in the Netherlands for a time. Which means for the first time in 11+ years I won’t be working in a gym.

Since early March I’ve had some interesting job offers, lots of opportunities discovered, turned 30, pitched new business ideas, even some old ones (bespoke fitted denims anybody?), it’s been fun.

To those who have taken part in the Strength for Life story, I thank you sincerely. You have let me live out a quality of life & fulfillment second to none. The people I’ve worked with have helped shape me professionally & personally over a decade.
My clients have been beyond fantastic. I’ e billed over 10,000 hours of PT but they still teach me things. There is no better feeling then meeting a client of years gone by who in passing tells me they still set up for split squats the same way, who hears me saying ‘dig deep’ after the set gets hard, who doesn’t fret about what they eat because they’re default is basically a juggernaut of momentum at this stage. It’s really great.

Onto the next chapter, onto the next challenge! Thanks everyone!

TRADE OFFS.

A nice way of saying sacrifices. You must make them to progress. Newtons Third Law states "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." Therefore, to make forward progress something must be 'left behind'. That's the sacrifice.

Ancient cultures have always recognised the need for religious type sacrifices, it is a practice inmately understood in ancient philosophy and is ubiquitous across all human civilisations in some form. The bigger the sacrifice the greater the perceived reward.

What does that mean for fitness, physique and health?
Find out what you are willing to do to make progress. Do it. Repeat.

That simple.
(but not really, so come learn from me. Start here... http://www.strengthforlife.ie/contact/)

'Detractors' they are everywhere. 'Naysayers, malcontents, negative people (for the school level skilled readers) do exist & will pass comment on you, your choices & your ideas. So what?
The predominant narrative in fitness & Instagram celeb motivational jargon is to never listen, to erect walls of silence between you & your critics, because they're jealous, narrow minded, because they 'don know me, ain't bin wer I bin, ain't walk a mile in ma shoes' kind of logic... but what if they're correct?
What if they do know more than you, about you, & about where you are going because they do have insight that you do not.
True folly is assuming we know everything & it precedes the inevitable 'fall'. Wisdom, some wise sage once said, is the capacity to think on & contemplate an idea without accepting it. Try that, listen to critics and really 'hear their message', ask them about their critique, assess their intent, learn & move on. Oh, & don't skip leg day cos you know one mad idea is enough for today.

Life is suffering. Happiness is a damned awful aim. There is so much suffering in life that any little deviation from your aim will leave you sad and miserable, dying a little inside. Aim to struggle & to find valid & appropriate struggle for your time & exertion to be worthwhile. Focus on negatives, things that are not working for you, fix them. Figure out pitfalls in your way of thinking or framing of the world, solve them & move on. Deepak Chopra is a certified binman who encourages disconnect from reality. Name one good valid and worthy thing that doesn't require sacrifice and struggle to achieve? Yes the struggle is real, but is it worth it?

When it comes to making changes understand the optimal dose is not always clearly visible.
It must be found by oneself, rarely borrowed from someone else, it is your own capacity to enact the new activity to achieve your desired outcome.

Start sensibly, get good advice & make sure your changes are both manageable & doable.

Question your willingness to do something new as a genuine measure of interest before taking on a resolution or goal.

What is involved and are you willing to do it?

It's a deeply personal thought, but the power of voluntarily opting into something versus being leveraged into it by perceived external forces can be an accurate predictor of success or failure.

Do this today, think of something you feel you SHOULD do? Now think of the reasons to do it.

Are they compelling enough for you to act? If so, stop reading, and do it. If not move on and repeat the process then act on something you are willing to do.

If you consistently find yourself unwilling to do things you really should be doing then you need to find a way to incentivise the positive outcome or disincentives the negative outcome.

Be an adult, take responsibility for yourself and the consequences.

If you are looking to make real progress this January with legitimate, real goals for the new year, start with one thing.

PAYING ATTENTION.

Take eating as an example. Pay attention to;
If you are hungry before you eat?
What is it you are going to eat?
Is it likely a good choice?
Do you want to or need to eat all of what is in front of you?
Would eating less suit also?
Is it the most nourishing option you have available to you?
Is is likely to be as tasty as you imagine it should?

Then act. Eat or don't eat. Eat it all or a portion. Take responsibility and do so willingly. Opt in to change and you're in control.

Should take all of 30secs with practise and it will make you accountable to yourself.

Sincere apologies to anyone currently trying to contact me via SMS or phone in the last week. I have been recently changed network providers but haven't been fully ported due to procedural failures with my new provider. Long story short I am available via email at eoinwalshpt@gmail.com and via Whatsapp in the meantime and will advise further when I know more or the issue has been fully resolved.

Thanks for your patience.
