Have you ever heard of a Reverse Shoulder Replacement?

In a reverse shoulder replacement, the normal ball-and-socket structure of the shoulder joint is reversed. An artificial ball is attached to the shoulder blade. An artificial socket is attached to the top of the arm bone. The large deltoid muscle that covers the shoulder is typically then able to move the arm.

Did you know that Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of degenerative joint disease?

OA occurs most frequently in the knees, hips and hands. It is often referred to as ‘wear and tear’ that effects the cartilage in the joints. The cartilage acts as a shock absorber and as an articulating surface between the bones in the joint. With age, our joints will pick up degenerative changes and these changes can be more symptomatic in some more than others.

The severity of your symptoms will guide which treatment options are most appropriate for you. Optimal management requires a variety of treatments and depending on the severity of the condition may require surgical intervention.

Surgery is reserved for severe clinical disease with structural changes in the joint.

Did you know that your Knees require 10 muscles to function?

Knees rely on quadriceps, which contain four muscles — re**us femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, and vastus medialis. Hamstrings also refer to another group of muscles — semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris. Hip abductors, glute muscles, and calf muscles also work together to stabilize the knee joint.

Strengthening these muscles can help alleviate the daily weight-bearing stresses experienced by the knees.

Following on from Feidhlim’s* inspirational story, we thought we would share some more information on his injury.

This is what an osteochondral defect looks like on MRI imaging. In layman’s terms it is essentially a defect or ‘pothole’ in the cartilage & underlying bone. Symptoms can be severely debilitating, and it can be a devastating injury for young athletes.

OATS surgery means Osteochondral Autograft Transfer Surgery which is where a piece of cartilage is harvested from a part of the knee that is non weightbearing and transplanted into the defect site. Professor Moran is a specialist in cartilage transplant procedures, and we undertake many of these surgeries each year in Sports Surgery Clinic Santry

Meet Molly Dunne.

Back in November 2021, Molly (middle of the picture) underwent a full ACL Reconstruction and Meniscus Repair.

As an All-Ireland Winner with Galway Camogie, Sport has always been a huge part of her life. When she was injured playing for her local team, this came as a huge blow as not only had it significantly impacted her playing career, Molly had also planned on tackling Mount Everest and attempting to reach Base Camp.

We're delighted to say that after some very long months of hard work and determination, Molly has returned to the playing pitches and achieved her goal of conquering Mount Everest by reaching Base Camp👏
