🍌 Smoothie Check: Healthy or Sugar Trap? 🤔
We took a closer look at the "Happy Monkey Apple & Blackcurrant" smoothie – a popular choice for many lunchboxes. The packaging says "No added sugar" – and that's true! 👏
But does that automatically make it "healthy" for our kids?
The good stuff:
✅ 100% fruit – no artificial additives
✅ No added sugar, no sweeteners
✅ A convenient portion of fruit on the go
What you should know (the critical points): ⚠️
1️⃣ High natural sugar content
Per 100ml it contains 10.1g of sugar – that doesn't sound like much at first. But the whole bottle (180ml) has 18g of sugar. That's almost 5 sugar cubes! 🧃➡️🍬🍬🍬🍬🍬🍬
Even though it's "just" fruit sugar – it makes a difference for little bodies and teeth.
2️⃣ "Free sugars" = faster into the bloodstream
Blending breaks down the cell structure of the fruit. The sugar gets released and enters the bloodstream more quickly – spiking blood sugar and being far less filling than a whole apple or banana. 😕
3️⃣ Not a thirst quencher!
Smoothies are snacks, not drinks for in between. When it comes to thirst, water is still the unbeatable champion. 💧
Our take:
This smoothie is a better choice than soda & co. – but not an everyday drink.
👉 Enjoy in moderation, see it as an occasional snack – and ideally not sipped over a long period (teeth!). And yes: a real piece of fruit is and always will be the better choice. 🍎
