Sligo in the West of Ireland. Our Committee is comprised of parents, siblings and carers/guardians of people with Down syndrome as well as other skilled volunteers who have an interest in supporting our work. We run regular public fundraisers and occasionally avail of small grants. We are a member of Down Syndrome Ireland, regulated by the Charities Regulator. We employ a part time Coordinator, Riona Rochford, who organises events and activities for our members and their families to promote socialisation, education and inclusion. Riona advocates on behalf of the branch and its members and generally keeps the branch and communication going. Riona is our main point of contact and can be reached on 086-4409596 or sligoinfo@downsyndrome.ie

We run various social events for our members to meet up and for family members to share information and gain support. We hold regular meet ups around the county in coffee shops, parks and play centres. We offer weekyl online yoga classes run by an OT, and our adults meet up at a monthly pool club in the Embassy. Each summer we offer our members subsidised places in mainstream activities such as surf camps in Strandhill. In the past, we have organised activities including yoga, art, photography, computing, baby & toddler events and many types of sports activities. We liaise with other local branches of Down Syndrome Ireland and relevant agencies such as Sligo Sports & Recreation Partnership, the HSE/CDNT, community groups, sports club, the ETB, RehabCare, Sligo ATU, NLN etc. To enquire about becoming a member or getting involved, please get in touch. This is good news for many of our members who struggle with needles. Great idea 💡

“It's actually class.”

That was the reaction of an Abbott employee after she tried out a new headset designed to put people at ease when giving blood.

The new mixed reality experience for blood donors took place during an employee blood drive at Abbott Diagnostics Division, Finisklin Business Park, Sligo on Monday.

Participants wear lightweight headsets with a translucent visor, so the eyes of donors are always visible to clinical staff, ensuring constant monitoring and evaluation.

For many, giving blood can be a nervous experience with visions of needles and blood.

Up to 80 donors, some of whom were Abbott employees, gave blood on Monday and many tried out the new headsets.

Explaining the background, Donal Bermingham, Division Vice President, Research and Developmenrt, Abbott Transfusion Medicine said: “My background was mechanical engineering and I joined Abbott in 2004 and went to Chicago in 2011 and I am still there."

He continued: “Some very bright people in Abbott devised this mixed reality operation.

"The first game they brought out is called the Zen garden and you can plant seeds and grow your own garden while you are giving blood.

"And you have relaxing music in the background to relax the body.

"There is a culture of the older generation giving blood for years but we are trying to builld a culture in younger people through this mixed reality scheme and bringing them in and getting them to be repeat donors.”
