People in Ireland perceive growing threat to their security

44% of respondents in Ireland agree that the country’s security is under threat, including 12% who strongly agree, reflecting concerns about the current international context. A majority of people in Ireland (58%) trust the European Union to strengthen security and defence and protect its citizens, compared with 52% across the EU, according to a new Eurobarometer survey.

Ireland below EU average on road deaths, but off track for 2030 goals

Ireland is among the better performing countries in the EU with 32 fatalities per million inhabitants in 2024 (EU average of 45). However, fatalities increased between 2019 and 2023, particularly among powered two-wheeler riders and pedestrians, and Ireland is not currently on track to meet the 2030 target of halving road deaths and serious injuries. Across the EU, 19,940 people were killed in 2024, a 12% drop since 2019 but still short of the pace needed to reach the 2030 goal.
