🚨 Toxic Plant Alert for Dog Owners on Ireland’s East Coast Beaches

Hemlock Water Dropwort (Oenanthe crocata) has recently washed up on Irish beaches following storms and high tides. This highly poisonous plant poses a serious risk to curious dogs who may sniff or chew plant debris along the shoreline.

Even small amounts can cause rapid, life-threatening symptoms. If you’re walking your dog on the beach, stay vigilant and seek immediate veterinary attention if you suspect ingestion.

Pet Toxin: Chocolate 🍫

Chocolate remains one of the most common toxins in dogs. Dark chocolate is particularly dangerous due to its higher theobromine content. Theobromine overstimulates the heart and nervous system and, in severe cases, can lead to collapse and may be fatal without prompt treatment.

Chocolate Poison Symptoms:-
• Vomiting and diarrhoea
• Hyperactivity and restlessness
• Increased heart rate
• Tremors
• Seizures

If you suspect your pet has ingested or been in contact with something toxic then contact your vet immediately.

March is

Pets are at risk from a large number of toxins and accidental toxin ingestion occurs more commonly than you may think, and the numbers are rising.

The Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) recorded almost 32,000 cases in 2025, a 26% year on year increase¹.

So, why March for Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month? Because Springtime is one of the riskiest seasons for toxin exposure due to the abundance of Easter treats and increased exposure to dangerous toxins in the garden such as spring plants, insect bites and stings.

Springtime Toxins:
• Chocolate, raisins and sultanas (hot cross buns)
• Tulips, daffodils and hyacinths
• Fertilisers, w**d killers and slug bait
• Insect bites and stings

If you suspect your pet has ingested or been in contact with something toxic then contact your vet immediately.

1. The Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) and Animal Poison Line reported handling almost 32,000 inquiries regarding pet poisoning in 2025, which is a significant increase from 25,300 in 2024

Did you know plaque can start forming on your dog’s teeth in just a few hours? 🦷🐶

If it’s not cleaned away, it hardens into tartar, which can lead to sore gums, bad breath and dental disease. Good oral hygiene can help. Ingredients such as chlorhexidine have been shown to help reduce plaque formation when used regularly.
