We Athletic Therapists are all over the world with growing and strong foundations mainly in the USA and Canada. The profession is growing here in Ireland as we can play an essential role within sports as well as helping people from all different populations with pain or injury related issues.
Athletic Therapy may sound like it is similar to Physiotherapy, which it is; however, there are differences. Athletic therapists specialise in musculoskeletal health (muscle, ligaments, tendons, etc) where are physiotherapy covers a broad range of physical therapies. In addition to this Athletic therapist have a strong foundation and understanding of strength and conditioning principles making us excellent sport injury rehabilitators.
In order to become an Athletic Therapist here in Ireland you need to complete a level 8 BSc Athletic Therapy degree, undertake 500+ hours of relevant work experience, be certified in Emergency and Cardiac first aid and complete an entry exam which requires a pass mark of 70%.
Athletic Rehabilitation Therapy Ireland (ARTI) is the governing body of Athletic Therapists in Ireland. It is responsible for the promotion, regulation, and continuous education of Certified Athletic Therapists.
