π«οΈ Phlegm in TCM: More Than Just Mucus!
Phlegm is not just what you cough up when you're sickβitβs a deeper, more complex concept that can affect both body and mind.
π§ Two Types of Phlegm in TCM
Visible Phlegm β Affects the body
π€§ Coughing up phlegm
π© Excess body fat
𧬠Cysts, nodules, lipomas
Invisible Phlegm β Affects the mind
π Depression
π΅β Foggy head & poor focus
πͺοΈ Dizziness
π§ How Phlegm Forms:
Phlegm can be created by external pathogens, emotions, poor lifestyle, or constitutional weakness. It often stems from dysfunction in the Spleen, Lungs, Kidneys, and San Jiao, leading to disrupted water metabolism. Once formed, Phlegm can travel anywhere in the body and block Qi.
β οΈ Common Symptoms of Phlegm Accumulation:
π¨ Coughing, wheezing, asthma
βοΈ Obesity, atherosclerosis
π½ Constipation with sticky stools
π« Chest oppression
𧬠Tumors, rheumatoid arthritis with joint deformities
π€― Mental cloudiness, emotional heaviness
π Phlegm obstructs Qi flow and disturbs the Shen (mind). It's a key factor in both physical and mental health imbalances.
