What do you need today?

So much of parenting can feel like a constant go and becomes the rhythm of the day. In the middle of that pace, it can be easy to lose sight of yourself.

Today, pause for a moment.
Step back and ask yourself, what do I need today to stay connected, steady, and present๐Ÿ’š

It might be a little more patience.
It might be a quieter tone, a walk, or listen to music.
It might be a moment to breathe.
It might be a cup of coffee and gather thoughts.

When you tune into your own needs, you create the space to meet your teenager where they are, not just manage where they need to be.

Take one minute today, check in with yourself, and choose one small thing you will do differently. Notice the difference ๐Ÿ’š

A gentle reminder for parents of teens, when your young person feels caught in worry, itโ€™s often a sign they need closeness more than answers.

Your calm presence, your listening, your staying with them in those moments, quietly helps them feel safer. And from that place, they can begin to find a little more ease, and their own sense of hope.

Understanding adolescent therapy

Adolescent therapy offers young people a space where they can begin to understand what is going on for them, in a way that feels manageable. Often, adolescents do not have the words to explain how they feel, so therapy gently supports them to express and explore this in different ways.

This might include using figures in a sand space, alongside drawing and simple creative explorations, to help them show what feels difficult or overwhelming. It can involve looking at what is happening in their mind and brain, helping them make sense of their reactions, and understanding how they respond to the world around them. At times, it may also explore the roles they take on, or the โ€œmaskโ€ they feel they need to wear, and how they engage with life and relationships.

Through this kind of work, adolescents can begin to feel more settled in themselves, develop a clearer understanding of their emotions, and build ways of coping that feel right for them.

If you are wondering about therapy for your adolescent, or would like to understand how this could support them. You can contact us in the following ways.

Choosing a book on adolescent development does not have to feel overwhelming. Start with one that feels clear, relatable, and supportive for you as a parent.

It can be helpful to choose two books so you can compare perspectives and take what feels most useful for you and your teenager. Also take time to listen to what Gina Dermody is sharing, along with other professionals you trust or follow, and notice what resonates with your family.

There is no one right approach, only what supports you to feel more confident and connected in your parenting.

If you would like guidance or support, we are here to help.
