Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety in adolescents can show up in many ways, overthinking, feeling overwhelmed by school pressure, social worries, withdrawal, irritability or a constant sense that something doesn’t feel right. Often, young people do not yet have the language to explain what they are feeling, but they know something feels heavy.

At Children, Adolessence & Beyond, we support children and adolescents to understand their feelings, develop coping tools and build a stronger sense of confidence and safety within themselves.

If your child or adolescent may benefit from support, guidance or a space to talk, we are here to help.

Looking for a peace of mind?πŸ’š

Sometimes the mind runs far ahead of the heart.πŸ§ πŸ’›

This morning with the Transition Year students we were exploring the difference between thoughts and feelings. Our thoughts can race quickly, often jumping to the worst case scenario as the brain tries to protect us. But feelings are different. They can be uncomfortable, powerful, joyful or confusing, yet they are not dangerous.

When an adolescent becomes defensive or negative, it may not be the feeling that is overwhelming them… it may be the story their thoughts are telling.

In those moments, connection matters more than correction.

A simple response like

"That sounds really difficult"
Can help a young person feel seen and understood. When we gently name what might be happening for them, we help them move from spiralling thoughts back into their feelings, where understanding and regulation can begin.

Sometimes the most helpful thing we can offer a young person is not a solution, but our calm presence and curiosity.

✨ Pause today and notice: Is this a thought, or a feeling?

If you are supporting a teenager, share this with someone who might need the reminder that connection always comes first.

Sometimes teenagers do not always need advice, explanations, or solutions.
Sometimes what helps most is a calm, steady presence beside them, someone who can sit with them, help them regulate, and remind them they are not alone.

At Child & Adolessence & Beyond, we understand that connection, safety, and gentle support are often the first steps toward helping young people feel calmer and more able to cope.

If your teenager could benefit from additional support, we are here to help.

Noticing the Small Good Moments

When a child or adolescent is struggling, it can be easy to focus on what is going wrong. Yet often the good is already there, in the small efforts they make, the moments of connection, the quiet signs that they are trying.

Sometimes the shift begins when we slow down enough to notice these moments. When we see them, acknowledge them and gently build from them, children and teens begin to feel safer, more confident and more understood.

Small moments matter more than we realise.

Overthinking 🀯

For many adolescents, overthinking can feel like carrying a heavy stone all day. Worries about school, friendships, social media, or fitting in can build and build until the weight feels overwhelming.

Part of supporting adolescents is helping young people learn that they don’t have to carry every thought. Some thoughts are unkind, unhelpful, or simply not true. Learning how to gently put the stone down can make space for clarity, confidence and calm.

If your teena is feeling overwhelmed by their thoughts, support is available.

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and the many women who shape the lives of the young people and families we support at Children, Adolescents & Beyond.

To the mothers, daughters, friends, carers, professionals and mentors who show up every day with strength, compassion and care your presence matters. The support, encouragement and understanding you bring into the lives of others helps young people grow, feel safe and believe in themselves.

Today is a moment to recognise the quiet strength, resilience and connection that women bring to families, communities and the next generation.

Pause for a moment and ask yourself a simple question "what do I need today as a parent?"

So often we move straight into the to do list, homework, dinners, rushing out the door, trying to keep everything together In the middle of that, its easy to forget that you matter too.

Taking even a small moment to check in with yourself can create space, calm and a little pocket of joy in your day. When parents look after their own wellbeing, it strengthens the whole family.

If you feel you need support, guidance or a space to talk, we're here to help.
