What does it really mean to listen?

Listening starts with us.
When we pause and tune into our own inner world first, we become more present, regulated, and emotionally available for our adolescents.

From this grounded place, we move from fixing to understanding.
And when a teenager feels truly heard, they feel safer to share their story, make sense of their experiences, and gently reframe the thoughts that may be holding them in place.

Connection comes before guidance. Always.

Honesty 🤍

Holding honesty with your adolescent is not about having all the answers.
It’s about creating a space where truth feels safe.

When young people feel they won’t be judged, corrected immediately, or dismissed, they are far more likely to open up. Honest conversations are not always comfortable, but they build trust, resilience, and connection over time.

Try this:
• Listen fully before responding
• Stay curious instead of reactive
• Acknowledge their feelings, even if you disagree

Honesty strengthens connection.

If you are supporting a teenager and finding communication challenging, you’re not alone. Support and guidance can make all the difference.
