✨️Stress is a word we are hearing of more often but what is it?

✔️Stress is defined as any type of change that causes physical, emotional or psychological strain. Stress is your body's response to anything that requires attention or action.

✔️The reality is stress is unavoidable. Everyone experiences stress to some degree however, the way we respond to stress is what determines its impact on our overall well-being.

✔️Recognising when we are experiencing prolonged or chronic stress and taking appropriate action is crucial to our overall health and well-being.

✔️Sometimes the best way to manage stress is to change the situation we are in, whereas other times changing how we respond to the situation is the best strategy.

🤧Chronic stress influences the development of many negative implications for our physical health. These include;
- weakened immune system
-headaches
-high blood pressure
-high blood sugar
-digestive issues
-low energy
-insomnia

🧠Implications of chronic stress on mental health include:
-depression
-anxiety
-Irritability
-addictive behaviours
-emotional dysregulation

🛠Implementing the tools highlighted in this post when we experience stressful events supports us to become more mindful of the stress we experience and less likely to be chronically stressed ✨️🌻

ℹ Trauma. What is it?
Trauma can often be misunderstood as something that happens to the mind body after a single incident/ traumatic event.

❌While this can be true for a lot of people, the mind and body can experiece trauma for a multitude of other reasons that are often not considered 'traumatic'.

⭐The image above shows some causes of trauma.

Below are some (not all) common symptoms of trauma

🧠Psychological

Overwhelming fear
Obsessive/ compulsive behaviours
Depression
Detachment from others /emotions
Anxiety
Anger
Irritability
Panic attacks
Shame

💭 Cognitive

Nightmares
Intrusive thoughts
Mood swings
Memory loss

🏃‍♂️ Physical

Insomnia
Easily startled
Muscle pain/ body aches
Extreme alertness
Fatigue

👩Behavioural

Isolation or withdrawal
Lack of interest in hobbies/ activities once enjoyed

ℹ Below are some of the ways untreated trauma impact on an individuals life:

Hostility towards others
Addiction (Substance abuse / alcoholism, gambling, food, spending)
Social withdrawal
Inability to maintain relationships
Self destructive/impulsive behaviour

💫Building awareness about the impact current and/or past experiences is having on your life can be transformative.

🫂The support and guidance of a trained professional can be helpful and is sometimes necessary when dealing with trauma.

📖 Inner reflection, learning new tools (breathing excercises, journaling) and reaching out to friends and family can be helpful
