Four-time All-Ireland-winning footballer, Siobhan McGrath, suffered a stroke last year.

The 35-year-old remembers waking up feeling ‘very confused’ and really struggling to get out of bed.

She knew something was not right when her house alarm sounded and she struggled to turn it off.

'In my mind, I knew what the correct code was but it was as if my body wouldn't let me enter it into the keypad.'

At this stage, she recalled a F.A.S.T. advert she had seen on TV.
“I tried to tell myself ‘You’re not having a stroke’, but the words didn’t come. I started to speak but simple sentences sounded like double Dutch.”

Siobhan was brought to hospital where an MRI confirmed that she had suffered a stroke.

She is very thankful for the support she received while recovering from her stroke.

“I’m lucky that I had my family and boyfriend surrounding me and minding me.”

Siobhan has since gone back to play football with her local club, the Thomas Davis Club in Tallaght and expressed her gratitude for all of the support received from her teammates.

Siobhan is a proud ambassador for the Irish Heart Foundation’s F.A.S.T. campaign and said ‘no one is invincible.

If you recognise any one of the F.A.S.T. signs get medical help immediately.’

F.A.S.T. signs of a stroke:
• 😐 Face – has it fallen on one side?
• 💪 Arms – can they both be held up?
• 🗣️ Speech – is it slurred?
• ⏱️ Time – time to call 112 or 999 – F.A.S.T.

Good morning, everyone,

Did you know that exercising outdoors has a greater impact on your mental health than alternative forms of exercise?

Exercising outdoors is more calming and has greater stress reducing properties.

We feel more revitalised and energised after exercising outdoors than we would if we exercised indoors.

Makes sense when we think of what’s on offer in Offaly.

So, get outdoors, get active and reap these many benefits

Think humans are meant to slow down as we age? Well, think again.

A team of evolutionary biologists and biomedical researchers have laid out evolutionary and biomedical evidence showing that humans evolved to be relatively active in their later years.

The researchers say that physical activity later in life shifts energy away from processes that can compromise health and toward mechanisms in the body that extend it. This guards against chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers.

"It's a widespread idea in Western societies that as we get older, it's normal to slow down, do less, and retire," said Harvard evolutionary biologist, Daniel Lieberman, the paper's lead author. "Our message is the reverse: As we get older, it becomes even more important to stay physically active."
