Yo-yo dieting, or weight cycling, can lead to several health issues. Repeated cycles of weight loss and regain result in increased fat, especially around the abdomen, while muscle mass decreases. This shift raises body fat levels and lowers metabolism, making future weight loss harder. Over time, more muscle is lost compared to fat, impairing physical strength and metabolic function. Weight cycling also triggers chronic inflammation in fat tissue, raising the risk of insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
