"The first study [TILDA] to show the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Ireland involved 5,035 participants, aged 50 or older, who took part in clinical assessments," said Professor John Nolan, Principal Investigator of the Macular Pigment Research Group in Waterford Institute of Technology.

As many as 7pc of Irish people aged over 50 have the serious eye condition AMD (age related macular degeneration).
