For over 30 years, the Waterford Rotary Club has proudly hosted our special Pancake Tuesday Party for senior citizens at the Tower Hotel.

The man behind the man behind Vision for Vision.

I’m Just home from the Garter Lane Waterford premier of John Nolan’s movie A Vision for Vision.

This excellent documentary details the story of world leading research on human ocular and brain health supplements carried out here in Waterford.

Prof John Nolan in conjunction with Prof Riona Mulcahy and a huge team of researchers and scientists have spent over 20 years studying dietary supplements that help reduce the affects of ageing on our bodies most sensitive membranes - our retinas and our brains.

Macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease are amongst the largest challenges we face with our aging population. Simply put - in a world where we are all living longer - parts of our bodies are dying before other parts.

The retina and brain are both our most useful and most complex organs, requiring not only large proteins, carbs and fats to nourish them but also an incredibly complex micro chemistry to ensure their accurate function within an aging body. It is precisely these fine micronutrients that John and his team have been studying.

As an optometrist for over 35 years I have seen the devastating effects of macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s on my patients and indeed my family.

Optometrists globally, now carry out OCT scanning on our patients. This allows us early detection of retinal changes and recommendation of micronutrient carotenoid supplements with proven benefits - researched here in our very own Waterford.

This has changed the face of optometric eye care globally and most importantly given patients both hope and important added time with their most precious sight and minds.
