Stomach tube feeders are a great way to get a known volume of colostrum into a calf, fast. 👍

But it only works when it’s done gently, by trained staff, and with the calf kept calm.
Just as important: clean properly every time with hot water, detergent, then disinfect.

Good technique + good hygiene = better absorption and healthier calves.

Weaning by weight or by intake? 🤔

Ideally, calves should be weaned based on dry matter intake: around 1.5–2kg of dry feed for 3 consecutive days.

But in reality, most farms aren’t weighing calves or closely monitoring intake.
That’s why a practical, consistent weaning plan matters just as much as the target itself.

A lot of calf setbacks come down to one simple thing: milk mixed at the wrong concentration.

One of the most valuable tools you can have in the calf kitchen is a Brix refractometer 👇

✅ Use it to check colostrum quality
✅ And just as importantly — to check milk / milk replacer concentration once it’s mixed

Whether you’re feeding through a JFC feeder, another automatic feeder, or mixing manually with buckets/teats, this is how you make sure you’re actually delivering what you think you are, 12.5% or 15%, mixed correctly, every time.

Calf jackets only work well when they’re clean.

A dirty jacket can become a source of infection, especially in young calves.

Wash jackets between uses at 70–80°C, and allow them to fully dry before going back on calves.

Simple hygiene, big health impact.

Good calf sheds don’t just stay ventilated, they stay warm at calf level.

Drafts, cold patches and wet areas can chill calves quickly.

The aim is simple:
✔️ Dry bedding
✔️ Airflow above calf height
❌ No drafts directly on calves

Small housing adjustments can make a big difference to calf comfort and performance.

Newborn calves struggle to hold body heat.👇

They’re born with very little fat cover, a thin coat, and not enough starter intake to generate rumen heat.

Calf jackets help bridge that gap, especially in the first 3 weeks, before they can regulate temperature properly.

A warm calf is a healthier calf, and healthy calves perform better long-term.

These weanling heifers in the west of Ireland are a great example of what happens when you stick to a plan from day one. 💪

Farm 1 — William & Tom Lynam

A strong batch of weanlings weighing 325kg at 7/8 months of age at the time of filming, and when they were sold roughly 2 weeks later, they averaged 340kg.
They were fed Neomilk Boast Skim (not the first time) and were on a TMR all summer, which really shows in the performance.

Farm 2 — first time on Neomilk Beyond Skim
This spring was the first season using Neomilk Beyond Skim. When the calves came back into the shed this winter, they were ahead of target weight for the first time, ranging from 8kg to 82kg ahead.

If you want a clear calf rearing plan that fits your farm, and support when you need it, give the team a shout.

Better conversion of milk and milk replacer can make a serious difference early on. 💯

Across our trial work over the years, we’ve seen up to 15% extra weight gain after 56 days when calves convert more efficiently.

That’s exactly why AuraCalf was developed: to support a stronger system within the calf, including gut and immune resilience, especially during common early-life challenges like Cryptosporidium (“crypto”) and coccidiosis. 🙌

A great day in Cork with our customers at a Dry Cow & Calf Rearing Focus Group, getting set for the calving season ahead. Plenty of honest discussion, practical questions, and takeaways you can bring straight back to the yard.🐄💪

We also launched AuraCalf to the group, an innovative calf health product that recently won the Gold Award at the National Dairy Show (Millstreet).

AuraCalf is 100% natural, derived from plant polyphenols, and designed to support calf health as part of a strong calf rearing programme, including:

• supporting immunity
• promoting a healthy gut biome (beneficial bacteria)
• supporting gut lining health (mucous production + tight junction integrity)
• antioxidant + anti-inflammatory support
• helping reduce the risk of crypto and coccidial challenge

Body condition scoring isn’t about guessing, it’s about spotting the small indicators that drive performance.🐄

In this clip, Nigel breaks down what a 2.5–2.75 cow really looks like and why it matters heading into the next stage of the season.

If you'd like support assessing your herd or planning ahead, our nutrition team can help.

Most cows should sit right around a body condition score of 3, it’s the sweet spot for calving, milk production, and staying in the herd longer.

If you can pinch a small bit of flesh and the ribs are well covered, you’re looking at a solid score of 3. From here, cows can afford to lose a little after calving and still bounce back, milk well, and go back in-calf on time.

For anyone unsure: the scale runs from 1 to 5 — 1 being extremely thin, 5 being fit for the factory.
