🌈 Affirmative Therapy - Focusing on Strength & Resilience 🌈
One of the key takeaways from my recent learning while completing a course “Defining Gender, S*x, and Relationship Diversity Therapy” is the power of survival, resilience, and post-traumatic growth - especially when working with LGBTQ++ clients. While I naturally integrate this approach into my practice (with all individuals), this module reinforced just how valuable it is to highlight the strength within each person’s unique journey.
For many in the community, past experiences, including the challenges of navigating a heteronormative world, can also be sources of inner strength and resilience. Whether it’s exploring identity, self-acceptance, navigating a coming out journey, facing microaggressions, or other life experiences, these moments can be powerful therapeutic tools to build on existing internal resources.
As a counsellor and psychotherapist, I focus on affirmative therapy, helping clients recognize and embrace the strengths they may have unconsciously developed through their interactions with the world – and often not even recognise in themselves. Therapy isn’t just about addressing struggles - it’s also about honoring resilience, celebrating growth, and fostering empowerment (again for all individuals).
