We often think of trauma as a memory, but it’s actually a spatial problem. It changes the layout of our mental home. Here is how we start the renovation.
Imagine your mind is a sunlit room. Ideally, it’s a space where you can move freely. But trauma changes the layout of that room in ways we don't always realise:
The "Big T" Trauma: Like a heavy wardrobe fallen across the doorway. You can’t "just get over it"—it’s physically blocking your path. You feel stuck because, quite literally, something immovable is in the way.
The "Little t" Trauma: Like worn, uneven floorboards. It’s not one big obstacle, but you’ve learned to walk carefully, bracing for the moment the floor gives way. It’s exhausting to live with that constant vigilance.
