Basic Ergonomic Workstation Setup

Tips on how to set up your computer / desk work space:

1. Arrange the items you use most often nearest to you e.g. keyboard and mouse.

2. Items you use less frequently can be placed slightly further away from you e.g. printer and items such as envelopes you use less frequently can be placed a distance away from you, encouraging you to get up and move around intermittently during your day.

3. Monitor / screen should be placed approximately arms length from you, with eye level between middle and top of monitor.

4. Document holder should be placed straight in front of you, between your keyboard and screen.

WicklowNews.Net - Wicklow Chiropractor
Since opening his chiropractic clinic in Wicklow Town almost two years ago, Vincent Pippet has experienced the growing pains of starting a new business. “Any start-up is challenging,” he said. “It’s time consuming – doing the paperwork, trying to get a website sorted, finding a premises – and none of it is free. That is definitely a challenge.”
Vincent has brought a strong sporting and fitness background to his new profession, having worked extensively in fitness industry and representing Ireland in squash, a sport he also coached.
Vincent also has a long history with the chiropractic profession and was once on the receiving end of the treatment.
“I had my own back problems in the past. I’d been to see chiropractors and decided to go back and study to be one.”
After earning a degree in Sports Science, Vincent has now gone on to further his study to become a fully qualified chiropractor.
Vincent has been delighted with the response he has received from members of the public and says working for himself is hugely motivating.
“The job satisfaction is excellent, and being able to do it in my own town is really, really satisfying. You’re helping people from all walks of life. Some people might have a disc problem, some people might have whiplash, and some might want to improve their sports performance. It’s a broad spectrum of people, and a really rewarding job.”
Vincent’s clinic, The Chiropractor, is based in the Wicklow Enterprise Centre on the Murrough in Wicklow Town.
The enterprise centre provides entrepreneurs like Vincent with facilities and expertise to help their business along in the early stages of development.
“The Wicklow County Enterprise Board has been great in giving me help,” Vincent said. “Look after the people who are good enough to support you, because they’re the most important thing. Word of mouth is the strongest referral you’ll ever get.”
As well as a range of chiropractic services, The Chirpractor also offers free drop-in clinics on Tuesday mornings when people can come to have their ailments assessed.

'Late starters' still have much to gain by exercising'

Taking up exercise in your 60s will still help stave off major ill health and dementia, research suggests. The study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine followed 3,500 healthy people at or around retirement age.

Those who took up exercise were three times more likely to remain healthy over the next eight years than their sedentary peers.

Exercise cut the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and depression.

People who took up exercise in their 60s were also less likely to struggle with day-to-day activities such as washing and dressing.

Wicklow People - Wicklow Chiropractor

With an estimated 400,000 people in Ireland suffering from chronic back pain – among other physical maladies – chiropractors (who specialise in the treatment of mechanical disorders in the musculoskeletal system) have never been in greater demand. One person who for the last year and a half has been bringing this essential service to the people of Wicklow Town has been local man Vincent Pippet through his business The Chiropractor.
Vincent has a long a long history with the chiropractic profession, having once been on the receiving end of this treatment.
‘I had my own back problems in the past,’ he tells the Wicklow People. ‘I’d been to see chiropractors and decided to go back and study to be one.’
He brought to his new profession a strong sporting and fitness background, having worked extensively in gyms and the healthcare industry and represented Ireland in squash, a sport he also coached. He earned a degree in Sports Science before going on to further his study to become a chiropractor, from whence the business was born.
Every new business comes with its challenges, and Vincent admits that the rigmarole involved in getting The Chiropractor up and running has been his most severe test to date.
‘Any start-up is challenging,’ he says. ‘It’s time consuming – doing the paperwork, trying to get a website sorted, finding a premises – and none of it is free. That is definitely a challenge.’
Despite these initial difficulties, Vincent is adamant that the chance to help the people of his community makes for a very rewarding career change, and one that has been embraced by the people of the town.
‘There’s been a really positive response to the business,’ he enthuses. ‘It’s been great to have people coming along supporting it.
‘The job satisfaction is excellent, and being able to do it in my own town is really, really satisfying. You’re helping people from all walks of life. Some people might have a disc problem, some people might have whiplash, and some might want to improve their sports performance. It’s a broad spectrum of people, and a really rewarding job.’
He recommends that budding entrepreneurs not shy away from asking for help and remember to take care of their customers first and foremost, as they – ultimately – will decide the fate of the enterprise.
‘Look and ask for help,’ he says. ‘The Wicklow County Enterprise Board have been great in givingme help. Look after the people who are good enough to support you; they’re the most important thing. Word of mouth is the strongest referral you’ll ever get.’

As well as a range of chiropractic services, he also offers free drop-in clinics on Tuesday mornings when people can come to have their ailments assessed.

Choosing a School Bag For Your Child
Even with a never ending list of things to do, it is important to choose the right school bag for your child as it will be carried by them throughout the school year. Here are a few tips to help protect their developing spines and maybe make your choice a little easier:
•Choose a back pack, instead of a bag with a single shoulder strap.
•Choose the right size bag (use top of the shoulders to the small of the back as a guide).
•Choose padded shoulder straps, adjust them correctly so weight is distributed evenly.
•The bag should be about 10% of your child’s total body weight. (Maybe try weighing them with and without the bag on)
•Place the heaviest items close to the back (as in your child’s back).
•Only carry what is needed, check it regularly.
Finally, the choice of a good school bag is as important as how it is carried!!! 2 straps are better than 1.

Spring Gardening & Avoiding Back Pain

Winter seems to be over, and for those with an interest in gardening, the season is well underway. Spring is probably the busiest season in the garden, plants are waking up, tidying is done after a long winter, and new plants are sewn for the year ahead.

Hurrying to get these jobs done after we have hibernated on the couch for a few months can increase the risk of injury or possibly result in low back pain. Here are some simple tips to help avoid this where possible:

•Wear loose clothes that don’t restrict your movement.
•Warm-up! Gardening is like any other exercise so start with lighter jobs and graduate to heavier ones.
•Use a ladder sensibly, move it regularly.
•Avoid overstretching, position yourself as close to the job at hand as possible.
•Invest in some long handled secateurs.
•Vary your activity, spend no more than 30 minutes on one job.
•Lift heavy items close to your body. Bend your knees.
•Take regular breaks, your back will thank you!

Hope this helps. Enjoy gardening, and the long awaited spring!

Good v Evil Posture

Spring is here and most of us are hoping to spend more time outside and active, be it in the garden, doing some exercise or at a gig. Having good posture is an important step in preventing back pain during any activity. The first signs of back pain are easy to ignore, especially when busy with our modern lifestyles, our families or our work.

When standing, ‘poor posture’ illustrated on the right is shown with a zigzag line. Pressure builds up at several points along this line when we adopt ‘poor posture’. This is due to our body weight, and the force of gravity. Some of the areas affected by poor posture are the neck, upper and middle back, and low back all of which may lead to back pain.

‘Good posture’ is demonstrated in the picture on the left with a line going straight through your ear, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle. The idea is to stand relaxed with your tummy muscles gently contracted, shoulders back a bit, and your chin in.
Put simply, good posture can help protect against back pain and should be maintained while seated, working at a computer, gardening, driving etc.

This is intended as basic reference information only, if you have any questions about posture or back pain, please get in touch.
