International Day of Yoga.

It used annoy me not being able do certain poses (damn you hips), but as I've practised it's become more of whether I can do a pose better than I did yesterday. Some days it's not even about the poses, it's the mental health and accepting today everything was utterly crap and fell apart on me, but I still got me.

Yoga has 8 limbs, physical asana being only one of them. And it doesn't make a whit of difference if you can touch your toes or not. It's the practise of yoga that brings the benefits, not touching toes or bending backwards into a perfect bridge.

Anyway, spiel over 😂 Happy yoga day! 💚

Acupuncture for lower back pain varies according to the different pathologies that cause back pain in TCM.

Acute injuries, blood stagnation, cold-damp and kidney deficiency are some of the pathologies in TCM that cause back pain.
Emotional factors over a long time can also contribute.

Lower back pain is slightly different though often confused with sciatica - sciatica is usually marked by pain running along the course of the sciatic nerve and extends from the back down along the buttocks, posterior of the thigh, back or lateral side of the leg and can extend towards the foot.

"Innercise"

I've found my new favourite word!

The opposite of exercise.

You don't expect a new body after one workout. It takes consistency and hard work. After consistency and hard work, working out becomes the new norm for you, a new way of living. The old you, the old body, has melted away and is replaced by new body.

Don't expect a new mindset after one meditation, one yoga session, one journal entry. It takes consistency and hard work. Give it the same dedication and consistency as exercise and your core beliefs about yourself will change. It's just as important as exercise.

Pain takes many different forms - dull, aches, sharp, throbbing and stabbing are different descriptions of pain. They point to different syndromes and give a clue where to start focusing attention.

Back pain in acupuncture has many different causes, the main ones being;

1. Stagnation of blood and qi - this can be from injury, posture, repeated actions, sprains, contusions. They can be acute (sudden injury) or chronic (brought on over time)
2. Cold and damp environment - Ireland is a good example of a damp environment. If you work or live in a cold and damp environment for a prolonged period, it can slow down the movement of Qi and blood leading to lower back pain. Environmental factors tend to work themselves into the organs over time leading to more complications such as back pain, stiffness, bladder issues, headaches.

3. Damp and hot environment - or heat damp is another cause of pain affecting the back. Working in hot damp environments for a long time can also affect the qi and blood

4. Diet - if the diet is full of raw or damp forming foods it can be similar to cold damp.

1 (injury) and 2 (cold damp) are the most common causes. Back pain can significantly alter your quality of life. The goal of acupuncture for back pain is to manage and reduce the pain, relax the muscles of the back allowing for a greater range of motion and improve the quality of life.

The head is the meeting place of all the Yang channels, and when everything is in balance is it the Palace of Clear Yang. When imbalances occur, headaches can occur.

Like much in acupuncture, there are a myriad of causes to headaches - diet, stress, lifestyle, hypertension or blood pressure, external factors and internal imbalances. An acupuncturist will want to know where the headache is (frontal, temporal, occipital, vertex, whole head etc.) and the type of pain experienced (dull, achy, sharp, pounding). It could be one sided, a regular occurrence or one that just won't go away! No two cases are really the same and treatment is usually specific to you.

Depending on the type of headache, points selected can be local points on the head stretching to distal points on the hands and legs. But whatever the type of headache, it is important to treat the root cause. Without treating the root cause of a headache, it's a recipe for inviting the headache back once again. Many people think Migraines are just a bad headache but the effects of migraine can include light/noise sensitivity, neck pain, fatigue, body aches and severe pain in the head.
