English at the Chinese Church in Haifa, Israel The Chinese Church in Haifa offers FREE English lessons to Chinese people working or studying in Haifa, to expand their spoken English skills. Why?

Regular services are held in Chinese after the English class. The Chinese Church in Haifa has been serving Chinese tourists, workers, and students in Haifa, Israel, for over 20 years. They offer free English lessons to regular attendees of the church, with the purpose of helping students improve their spoken English skills, expand their vocabulary, and become more familiar with the Western style of discourse--necessary for successful adaptation to Western culture. We use the Bible as a text book. Because most students are unfamiliar with it at any level, or unfamiliar with its language in English. In this way, all students start out together with a common unfamiliar terminology and perspective. This enables a unique approach to English that enables students to expand their vocabulary, discussion skills, reading skills, and enhance their understanding of translation, while also introducing them to a book that is quite central to life in Israel--the Bible. No fees are charged. The instructor is Deborah Hemstreet, an award winning Technical Communicator. She brings a broad experience of medical, academic, and hi-tech terminology to her teaching, peppered with humor and a love for China and her many peoples. She has been teaching Chinese people for over 20 years.
