“Guru” means one who removes darkness or heaviness. Father and mother are the first gurus. The role of the parents is to remove the darkness in their son or daughter and guide them in their personal lives. The teacher or spiritual guru comes later.

The student must have the potential and desire to change, motivation plays an important role. The teacher is like the earth. The earth cannot make a lemon seed grow into an apple tree. The teacher is a supportive cause, not a material cause. If proximity to a teacher could change a student, all students would change. We do not see this happening.

No doubt the student comes to the teacher with hope. But they are on the lookout for an easy solution. They actually want to give away their problems to the teacher in the hope that the teacher can make them vanish. This is not possible. The teacher can, at best, be a guide to help you deal with your problems with a better state of mind. That is why I do not analyze my students; I help them to analyze themselves.

The guru has to help the student reflect so that he or she can make the right decisions. If the student is very confused the teacher should suggest a proper practice (asana, pranayama, or meditation) to bring him to the right mental state. Then the student will be able to become steady by slowly building up trust in himself. The job of the teacher is to make sure the student trusts himself/herself. It is not the job of the teacher to make the student trust in the teacher. The teacher must guide the student on the right path and help him/her develop trust in himself/herself. The student will be able to move in the right direction through the development of his own inner strength.

In the Bhagavad Gita, even Lord Krishna, the incarnation of the Divine, at the end of the 18th chapter, after clearing away all the doubts of Arjuna and explaining the truth, tells Arjuna that he can decide what he wants to do. I think it is important for any teacher to remember this.

Any endeavor in life is undertaken with some outcome in mind. Consciously, we may not be entirely clear of what that desired outcome is, but there is a drive within us, at least subconsciously, that impels us. Being unclear of what we wish to achieve is a recipe for incoherent action, a meandering journey, and an uncertain result.

Yoga practice is not an exception to this general rule in life. Yoga is an ancient practice and a long path; we had better be clear of the milestones along the way. In other words, it is wise to first consider what is possible and what is not.

Mistaking the practically impossible for the realistically achievable is a recipe for pointless pursuit. Three words are useful here: ultimate, distant, and possible.

The ultimate goal of classical yoga is complete stillness of the mind, but this is achievable only for the occasional rare soul. A distant goal for many yoga practitioners could be to sit in meditation for a couple of hours. Goals in the near term that are actually possible include increased strength and flexibility in the body, lightness and clarity of the mind, a sense of well-being and calm, more impulse control, etc.

The goalposts are different for each individual, and they’re moving all the time.

As our practice ebbs and flows, so do the goals. It is imperative to be aware of what those goals are, how relevant they are, and how far away they are.

Going slow is crucial in a world not designed for our rapid pace. Unlike apes and other mammals that naturally rest between activities, the historical human pace was also slower, rooted in nature-based tasks like gardening and agriculture.

Reflecting on the value of slowing down reveals that the rush for a quicker future experience diminishes current satisfaction. The fear of loss by slowing down is unfounded, as only a few tasks require quick completion.

Habitual hurrying diminishes attention span, while taking more time cultivates better judgment and skill. Shifting our value system in emotional and behavioral practices is essential; physical slowness with mental restlessness is unhelpful.

Slowing down applies to various domains, including the asana practice. Intention setting involves using slower movements to enhance stability or alignment and smoothing the breath for intensified pranayama effects. Intentions include giving permission to take time, appreciating the feeling of slowing down, and enjoying relaxation.

Taking your time in daily life means identifying activities and times to slow down, bringing intentions and affirmations into daily life without pressure. During tasks, absorb the experience without suppressing the tendency to rush.

Language, too, plays a crucial role; replacing those inducing hurry and replacing them with words supporting affirmations (such as- in your own time, at your pace, breathe, etc.), breaks the pattern of stress.

If restlessness arises, breathe through it mindfully, return to your affirmation with a gentle inner nudge, and recapture the experience of taking it slow.

אם אנו נאמנים לדרכנו, חיינו ישתפרו, והאור של שלמות רחוקה יפציע ויאיר את מסעותינו."
