When planning a new organization, one can only dream of how successful it will be. There are so many thoughts and ideas put into consideration to maximize potential. In less than two short years, Sfat Halev has succeeded in achieving many milestones.

A tremendous thank you goes to our dear volunteers, for sharing their time and experiences. Each conference, event, support session and delivery of specialty equipment is no doubt thanks to you. Thank you for making this conference the success that it was.

Thank you to Yehudis and Tamar Schoen for traveling all the way from Los Angeles, CA to share with us your story and experiences. Many mothers are still in the beginning of this journey, and seeing you as a dynamic duo of courage, support and love strengthens and gives them hope.

Thanks to each and everyone that joined!

Did you know that a cleft lip/palate can produce a variety of dental problems? These may involve the number, size, shape and position of both the baby and permanent teeth. The teeth most commonly affected by the clefting process are those in the area of the cleft, primarily the lateral incisors. Clefts usually occur between the cuspid and lateral incisors. The teeth in the area of the cleft may be displaced, resulting in their erupting into complicated positions. In addition, these teeth may be poorly formed with an abnormal shaped crown and or root. Occasionally, the central incisors on the cleft side can also incur similar problems. In some cases the vital lateral incisors may be absent. In other cases there may be a "twining" of the lateral incisor.
Proper dental care is a crucial step in the treatment of a cleft lip/palate. Its recommended to have your care monitored by a dentist thats familiar with the clefting process.
Please join Sfat Halev tomorrow, Tuesday June 7th, 2016 on our Hebrew page for a virtual Q&A session featuring Dr. Eyal Botzer, professor of dentistry at Ichilov Hospital from 2-3 pm EST. Dr. Botzer will be addressing the vital aspects and impact of a cleft lip/palate on dentistry.

Establishing an organized medical association is the first step in creating a lifelong relationship between providers and patients. Medical associations typically have a particular purpose, which involves connecting people around a specific medical arena. This might simply be to encourage or facilitate interaction and collaboration, but it also involves promoting and enhancing the purpose itself. Sfat Halev is proud to announce that this past week we were successful in facilitating the organization of the first medical professional association for cleft lip / palate in Israel. It's through these efforts that we will see further advocacy and positive changes on behalf of the Israeli children born with cleft lip / palate.

For two thousand years, we were taunted and humiliated. An ancient battle replayed throughout generations. Then with the birth of our country, our birthright finally became our homeland.
To our beloved country, our modern day Maccabee; thank you for your bravery, thank you for instilling courage, but most importantly, thank you for the sacrifices we will forever honor.

Separated from the world to be no more. Remember us, for we were the children whose dreams and lives were stolen away. Forget us no more.

In loving memory of the six million who perished in the atrocities of the Holocaust. 1.5 million of them little children, precious souls, who never had the opportunity to enjoy the beauty life has to offer. Let us honor their memory by honoring the living, our special children, and touch their lives so they can be the forbearers of future generations.

Did you know that hearing loss in a cleft palate patient is a well known complication, but generally gets ignored? These children continue to have recurrent otitis media with effusion that affects the hearing abilities. Unfortunatley the middle ear function may not improve with repair. Cleft palate teams need to follow up all such children beginning at birth and going into adulthood, decades after a ‘successful’ palate repair. These patients should have careful otological and audiological surveillance with appropriate interventions whenever required.

Do you have similar question you would like answered? Our monthly virtual Q&A session will take place tomorrow 1:30 - 3:30 EST over on our Hebrew page: שפת הלב. We are proud to be hosting Dr. Yaniv Avner, chief of Ear Nose and Throat and renowned cleft palate specialist from Meir and Assuta Hospitals.

Craniofacial defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common of all birth defects. They can occur as an isolated condition, or may be one component of an inherited disease or syndrome. The vast majority of cleft cases are isolated, and more than 70% of the time are unaccompanied by other congenital defects. The lifetime cost of treating the children born each year with cleft lip or cleft palate is estimated to be $697 million. The CDC estimates that 7,088 babies are born each year in the US with an oral facial cleft.

Due to the number of oral health and medical problems associated with a cleft lip or cleft palate, a team of doctors and other specialists is usually involved in the care of these children. Members of a cleft lip and palate team typically include:

Plastic surgeon - to evaluate and perform necessary surgeries on the lip and/or palate

Otolaryngologist - (an ear, nose, and throat doctor) to evaluate hearing problems and consider treatment options for hearing problems

Oral surgeon - to reposition segments of the upper jaw when needed, to improve function and appearance and to repair the cleft of the gum

Orthodontist - to straighten and reposition teeth

Dentist - to perform routine dental care

Prosthodontics - to make artificial teeth and dental appliances to improve the appearance and to meet functional requirements for eating and speaking

Speech Pathologist - to assess speech and feeding problems

Speech therapist - to work with the child to improve speech

Audiologist - to assess and monitor hearing

Nurse coordinator - to provide ongoing supervision of the child's health

Social worker / psychologist - to support the family and assess any adjustment problems

Geneticist - to help parents and adult patients understand the chances of having more children with these conditions

Your health care team works together to develop a plan of care to meet the individual needs of each patient. Treatment usually begins in infancy and often continues through early adulthood.

Don't be alone, let Sfat Halev be a part of your interdisciplinary team.
