Makassed Hospital is the biggest hospital in East Jerusalem, containing 220 beds in different departments. Orthopedic department contains about 34 beds; more than 1500 orthopedic operations are performed each year including major and minor surgeries. Residency program is a 5 year program, The first two years of the program include “core” rotations in a variety of subspecialties including: plastic surgery, general surgery, emergency and general medicine. The residents then rotate through orthopaedic subspecialty rotations for the remaining three years of the program. The rotations include: general orthopaedics, orthopaedic trauma, reconstructive orthopedics, paediatric orthopaedics, orthopaedic oncology and hand surgery. The Orthopaedic Residency Program is the first residency training program in Palestine. The residents have access to a large volume of orthopaedic cases and the program is able to provide a near complete training. By the time of their graduation the residents are competent surgeons who have participated in a large volume of surgical procedures. Managing orthopaedic emergencies is a key component of orthopaedic training and the residents see a large volume of orthopaedic trauma cases.
