Spotlight: One Grandfather’s Exceptional Love and Devotion at Herzog

Several times a week, 73-year-old Shimi Arma travels from Bat Yam to Jerusalem to sit beside the hospital bed of his ventilated grandson at Herzog Medical Center. He gently holds his hand, sings to him, reads stories, and shares updates from home—because, as Shimi says, “Being by his side, even when his response is limited, is how I show him love.”

Shimi’s devotion began from the moment his grandson was born. Using his technical skills, he transformed his home into a “mini hospital,” caring for him during his early years with tireless dedication. Today, alongside his ongoing volunteer work in the community- tutoring high school students and giving back wherever he can- Shimi spends hours each week at Herzog, offering his grandson constant presence, comfort, and hope.

What gives Shimi strength is knowing his grandson is in good hands. He speaks with deep gratitude about Herzog’s devoted staff and the holistic care provided in the Pediatric Chronic Respiratory Unit. “Here,” he says, “I know he is cared for- not just medically, but with genuine love.”

At Herzog, stories like Shimi’s remind us that healing is a shared journey- woven together by families, patients, and compassionate medical teams who walk alongside them every day.

Today, we lit the first candle of Chanukah together with the children, families, and staff of our Pediatric Chronic Respiratory Unit.

We gathered in prayer, allowing the light of Chanukah to fill the ward. Families shared their gratitude and hope, reminding us of the strength found in choosing faith, compassion, and togetherness- even in the most challenging circumstances.

When we turn on the news, we are confronted with how much darkness surrounds us. Yet within the walls of Herzog, a different reality shines- an oasis of compassion and care, where children and families facing their hardest moments choose life and receive the support they need most. Here, we hold fast to the belief that no situation is ever hopeless, and that there is always a way forward.

We wish you a joyful Chanukah and extend our deepest blessings to the incredibly brave children, their devoted families, and the extraordinary medical teams who show up each day with skill, dedication, and heart.

May this holiday bring light into the darkness, healing and strength, and both small and great miracles to the people of Israel and to all of humanity. 🕯️✨

Last week, we had the honor of welcoming Ezra Cohen, the Panamanian Ambassador, to Herzog Medical Center.

During his visit, we shared Herzog’s mission and explored potential avenues for collaboration with the Panamanian government in the field of healthcare and innovation.

We are grateful for the strong support of Panama’s Jewish community and all our American and international friends, whose ongoing partnership and commitment to Herzog’s work continue to make a meaningful impact.

Thank you for your visit, your care, and your support. We look forward to what lies ahead.

Celebrating Meaningful Moments💙

After a long and challenging journey on respiratory support, this week one of our patients reached a major milestone, successfully transitioning from our respiratory unit to rehabilitation here at Herzog. This achievement reflects both his own strength and perseverance, alongside the dedication of our remarkable medical team who never stopped believing in his recovery.

Herzog’s Adolescent Chronic Respiratory Unit is part of Israel’s largest children’s division and one of the leading centers worldwide. The unit cares for young people ages 14–25 with complex medical conditions, with a commitment to quality of life and family-centered care.

Moments like these remind us why we do what we do: when medical excellence meets compassion, remarkable outcomes are possible.

With heartfelt thanks to our Adolescent Respiratory Unit for the care, kindness, and devotion you bring to children and youth every day and warm wishes to our patient as he continues his journey toward recovery. 💙

Making Dreams Come True at the Western Wall
An Emotional Bar Mitzvah celebration we will never forget.

This week, we had the privilege of helping Yosef Yitzhak (Yoske) - a brave 13-year-old boy hospitalized in Herzog Medical Center’s Children’s Chronic Respiratory Unit - fulfill his dream of celebrating his Bar Mitzvah at the Western Wall.

With the extraordinary support of Magen David Adom’s Wish Ambulance team and the unwavering dedication of our pediatric staff, Yosef was transported safely from his hospital bed to Jerusalem’s most sacred site, where his family awaited him with tears, prayers, and open arms.

And then something beautiful happened:

Worshippers and passersby noticed the moment and gathered around, offering blessings, songs, and smiles. In those few sacred minutes, a boy who spends his days connected to life-support equipment was lifted by the embrace of an entire community.

Paramedic Batya Shushan shared:

“Seeing the joy in Yoske’s eyes and the love surrounding him was unforgettable.”

Herzog staff shared:
“This was a dream months in the making. For us, providing world-class medical care also means creating moments of joy, dignity, and connection to family and tradition.”

Mazal Tov, dear Yoske!
May you continue to bring light to everyone around you. You are loved.

From Hiding to Healing: Meet Prof. Rena Gill, Israel’s Most Veteran Physician and Holocaust Survivor

Today on Yom Hashoah we remember the horrors of the Holocaust — and honor those who rose from unimaginable darkness to rebuild lives of purpose and service to others.

Prof. Rena Gill, head of the Pediatric Respiratory Department at Herzog Medical Center, is one of those extraordinary individuals. Now over 90, she remains Israel’s most senior practicing physician, still overseeing the care of ventilated children and their families with deep compassion and dedication.

Born in Katowice, Poland in 1933, Rena spent 22 months in hiding with her mother, grandmother, and aunt during the Shoah. All the men in her family were murdered — except her father, who miraculously found them after the war. During those long, terrifying months in a dark attic, feeling invisible and forgotten, Rena made a promise to herself: if she survived, she’d become someone who could help others. She would become a doctor.

After immigrating to Israel as a teen, she started school in the fifth grade and — against all odds — became one of the first women to study medicine at Hebrew University. Despite immense barriers, she became a pioneer in neonatal intensive care and eventually found her professional home at Herzog, where she leads innovation in pediatric respiratory medicine.

“In truth, it was the mothers who saved us,” she recalls. “They did everything to hold on to life — to ensure their children would survive. In 1941, with Europe under occupation and no end in sight, these women somehow found the strength to keep going. They made sure we stayed engaged — to save us not only physically, but emotionally. That belief in life, in survival, gave them their strength. That’s real heroism. They kept the ember of life burning — and I strive to honor their legacy through my work.”

At Herzog, she ensures that children who are chronically ventilated — children who might otherwise be overlooked — receive not only top-tier medical care, but are treated with dignity and a lot of love.

“I don’t see prognosis,” she says. “I see a human being — someone who senses, who feels. Our staff of nurses and therapists work around the clock to make sure these children receive the best care and quality of life we can offer.”

She adds: “I never dreamed of healing the whole world. I just wanted to do good, after so much was taken.” Through decades of service, Prof. Gill has touched and uplifted countless lives — and continues to do so every day.

“I love what I do,” she says. “Why would I stay home or travel the world, when I can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life?”

Today, Herzog is also proud to serve Holocaust survivors through our mental health services and comprehensive geriatric rehabilitation programs.

We are deeply honored to have Prof. Gill on our team.

At Herzog Hospital, we believe that nature is an essential part of the healing and rehabilitation process.

Our gardens and courtyards are more than green spaces - they are an integral part of our therapeutic approach. These gardens have been especially designed to help patients in physical therapy walk on different surfaces as part of their rehabilitation. They are also designed as a closed garden for Alzheimer’s patients, so that they can go outside and get fresh air, but not get confused and wander off.

Studies show that being in a natural environment significantly contributes to reducing stress, improving mood and speeding up recovery processes. We strive to continue developing Herzog Hospital as a place where nature and medicine integrate together for the benefit of the patients' health and well-being.

At any other event, I would have taken photos, but yesterday, I wanted to be only with Hersh, this young and handsome man, so full of life, funny, generous, intelligent, Hersh a supporter of Hapoel Jerusalem. I wanted to be with him and all those who, like me, were accompanying him on his last journey.
Pain flooded Givat Shaul Street with a crowd of men and women whom Hersh had never met. Pain that cannot be expressed in words or images, a pain that can only be felt in the depths of our stomachs and in the tears streaming down our faces.
As the stream of people passed Herzog Hospital, many of its employees joined them.
The anonymous crowd gathered at the entrance to the cemetery, close together, united in their sobs.
Hersh our son, our brother, Hersh our friend, has gone to the other world and left us all alone in this world, mourning.
A mourning people, free in their country, longing only for peace.
Our hope is not lost...

At Herzog Hospital, the healthcare facility with the largest chronic respiratory care department in Israel, we are ready to admit ventilated patients from hospitals in the north, should Iran and Hezbollah start their attacks.
In an interview for Israel Hayom, Dr. Jacob Haviv, CEO of Herzog Hospital, said : "We have 340 emergency beds equipped with power connections, medical gases, oxygen, and communication systems, with cameras installed above most beds. We are currently constructing an additional fortified emergency unit with 50 more beds in a separate location.”
