The Center for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at Hadassah is a multidisciplinary center that coordinates the treatment and follow-up of multiple sclerosis patients in the Jerusalem area and its surroundings, and is a reference center for patients all over the country and abroad. In the Center there are neurologists who are an experts in multiple sclerosis, a nurse and a social worker, a psychologist, and advisors on visual problems and urological problems. In addition the Center is located in close contact with the Center for Rehabilitation at Har HaTsofim. The follow-up on the patient is done in the clinic which is open daily. The clinic may be reached by telephone at 02-6776939. Patients are examined by doctors of the Center (Prof. Karussis, Dr. Vaknin-Dembinsky, Dr. Petrou) and by physicians from the Department of Neurology (Prof. Abramsky, Professor Ben-Hur, Dr. Ponger, Dr. Yghmour). Patients can receive an evaluation of their situation from specialists in urology (urinary and sexual problems), rehabilitation (motor problems), and neuropthalmology (vision problems). In the Center, the patients are evaluated using novel immunological tests (detection of antibodies against interferons, detection of antibodies directed against proteins of the white matter in the brain and spinal cord). These tests can help to diagnose the disease more accurately and to classify it according to immunologic characteristics to ensure an effective treatment adjusted for each patient. The patient can also receive advice regarding his/her unique social needs from a nurse (Michal Mor) and social worker, both with many years of experience in treating patients with multiple sclerosis. What distinguishes our Center is the combination of excellent clinical care together with immunological research performed in the Neuroimmunological Laboratory and the Department of Neurology, which allow the development and direct implementation of innovative therapies for the disease. For example, the novel immunomodulatory drugs Linomide and Laquinimod, treatment of vaccination with T-cell lymphocytes and transplantation of stem cells (bone marrow transplants and transplants of STROMA cells as a treatment to encourage neurogenesis (new growth of neurons and myelin forming cells) and protect brain tissue from the progression of brain damage). Therapeutic cell transplants were first developed in our lab and in the Center for MS and in most cases are given only in the framework of clinical trials solely at the Center for MS at Hadassah Medical Center, Jerusalem. Dimitrios Karussis, expert in neuroimmunology and Israeli representative in the great European forums related to multiple sclerosis, Director of the new Center for MS at Hadassah under the auspices of the Director of the Department Prof. Tamir Ben-Hur,. Dimitrios Karussis has in recent years initiated various clinical studies with novel drugs such as Linomide, with T cell vaccination and with stem cell transplantation in MS. This therapeutic project has recently received a boost through collaboration with other centers in the world.

והן על ידי רופאים מהמחלקה הנוירולוגית (פרופ. בן-חור, פרופ. אברמסקי, ד״ר חורי ואחרים). ומקבלים בנוסף הערכה ע"י רופאים מומחים באורולוגיה (דרכי השתן ובעיות מין), שיקום (בעיות מוטוריות), כאבים וספסטיות, נוירואופתלמולוגיה (בעיות ראייה) וע"י פסיכולוג המרכז (לבעיות פסיכולוגיות וקוגנטיביות).
הערכת החולה במרכז לטרשת נפוצה
במרכז לטיפול ואבחון טרשת נפוצה החולים עוברים הערכה הכוללת בדיקות אימונולוגיות חדישות כגון זיהוי נוגדנים כנגד אינטרפרונים, זיהוי נוגדנים המכוונים כנגד חלבונים של החומר הלבן במוח וחוט השדרה ועוד. בדיקות אלו יכולות לעזור לאבחון מדויק יותר של המחלה ולסווג של המחלה אצל כל חולה וחולה על פי מאפיינים אימונולוגים, על מנת להתאים טיפול יעיל, באופן אישי (individualized).
כמו כן, ניתן לקבל יעוץ לצרכים הסוציאליים היחודיים של החולים בעזרתן של אחות (גב' מיכל מור) ועובדת סוציאלית (גב' שושי קרן), שתיהן עם נסיון רב שנים בטיפול בחולי טרשת נפוצה
המייחד את המרכז החדש הוא השילוב של הטיפול הקליני יחד עם המחקר האימונולוגי שמתבצע במעבדה הנוירואימונולוגית והמחלקה הנוירולוגית, שמאפשרים פיתוח וישום ישיר של טיפולים חדשניים למחלה , לדוגמא, שימוש בתרופות אימונומודולטוריות חדישות ( LINOMIDE ו- LAQUINIMOD ), טיפול עם חיסון על ידי תאיים לימפוציטארים מסוג -T , והשתלות תאי גזע (השתלות מח עצמות והשתלות תאי MSC כטיפול לעידוד צמיחה חדשה של נוירונים ותאים יוצרי מיאלין, והגנה על רקמת המוח. טיפולי השתלות תאים פותחו לראשונה במעבדתינו וניתנים במסגרת ניסויים קליניים אך ורק במרכז לטרשת נפוצה במרכז רפואי הדסה, בירושלים.
פרופ. דימיטריוס קרוסיס, מומחה לנוירואימונולוגיה (ויו"ר החברה הישראלית לנוירואימונולוגיה) ונציג ישראל בפורומים האירופאים הגדולים הקשורים לטרשת נפוצה, מנהל את המרכז החדש לטרשת בהדסה. פרופ' קרוסיס יזם בשנים האחרונות מחקרים קליניים שונים עם תרופות חדישות כמו לינומייד, עם חיסון ע"י תאי T ועם השתלות תאי גזע בטרשת נפוצה. פרוייקט טיפולי זה מקבל לאחרונה תנופה תוך שיתוף פעולה עם מרכזים אחרים בעולם, ומהווה תקוה גדולה לכל המחלות הניווניות של מערכת העצבים.
