Tips on how to survive the 1st trimester.

Stay hydrated:
H2O helps prevent UTIs , fights fatigue, prevents constipation and hemorrhoids. Water also helps the vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and hormones get to your placenta and baby. Did you know your blood volume will increase by an average of 45% during pregnancy?

Eat well:
It isn’t always easy to find things to eat during the first trimester. Do your best to eat a healthy balanced diet. Find out what foods are not pregnancy friendly!

Nausea management:
Eat small meals and snack often. Nothing exacerbates nausea more than an empty stomach. Sometimes dry crackers are the only thing that will stay down. Smelling a lemon can help pass a moment of nausea. Ask your Doctor about vitamin B-6 and other medication to help curb nausea. Ginger ale might become your best friend.

Physical activity:
Low impact exercises such as walking, yoga, swimming and Pilates. If you are used to running or jogging, you can keep up with that too. Always check with your Doctor to make sure these activities are safe for you.
Sleep: This exhaustion has a lot to do with hormonal changes and specifically progesterone as well as your blood volume increasing. Your heart and body are working hard as they sustain this new life.

Scheduling prenatal appointments and finding a doula:
Doctors clinics and doulas tend to get booked up months in advance. It is a good idea to book your appointments as soon as you can so that you don’t miss the window of time for each exam. This is also a great time to start interviewing doulas and finding a birth class right for you.🤍

Perfection
What does perfection mean to you?
Does it mean no surprises?
Smooth sailing?
No regrets?
Growth?
Does it mean going with the flow?
Giving Grace?
I think that the general definition of the word is a concept that is rarely attained.
It leaves no room for trial and error.
Expecting the perfect marriage, the perfect pregnancy, the perfect post-partum body, to be the perfect mother, is a set up for disappointment. Still, we cling to these ideas and fantasies in our heads, and it is so stressful.
Does obsessing over perfection, or the lack of it, contribute to our experiences in life?
We can do our best to plan, try and make the best educated decisions, pray to Hashem for His blessing and help in each situation.
Our life experiences are opportunities to grow and progress.
We gain priceless knowledge, experience, and courage every time.
I hope that we all can arrive at each experience, open, vulnerable, hopeful, trusting and optimistic.
To give birth this way is perfect.
It is raw and emotional.
Just as our bodies open to give birth. Our hearts open too.
This is how the light and love our children bring with them, enter our souls and effect us so deeply.
🤍

What kind of Birth do you want?
Towards the end of a meeting, a potential client said "this is the first time anyone had asked me what I want.
She went to her Doctors appointments and felt like, one of many passing through that day.
In her birth class she felt again, one of many.
No one took the time to check in with her!
As a doula this is my first question.
What kind of birth do you envision?
What is your fantasy?
How can I get to know you better to support you in the best way through your birth?
How involved and in what way does your husband wish to be part of your birth?
My goal is to being as intentional as possible and as precise as possible.
Birth is individual and personal.
You matter.
Your partner matters.
Your preferences are important.
All your questions and your thoughts are legit.
So tell me, what is on your mind?

Women were never meant to give birth alone.
Not that you can't. It is just that we were meant to be supported, nourished, sustained and pampered through the birth process and afterwards.
Midwives are even mentioned in the Torah. Shifrah and Puah were the women who essentially saved Jewish pregnancy and childbirth during our slavery in Egypt.
Great commentators such as Rav, Rashi and Malbim have many explanations and have answered questions that would otherwise be eternal ponderings about them.
Rav says that Shifra was Yocheved, Moses' esteemed and righteous, mother. Puah was Miriam, Moses' beloved sister.
Rashi commentates that "Shifra" means to improve לשפר/ שיפור he believed it to be pertaining to the health of the newborn. Puah, referring to a cooing sound designed to soothe the little babies.
Finally, the Malbim "a master of Hebrew grammar and biblical commentator", says that Shifra and Puah are not people, but a description of the special jobs of guiding a mother safely through labor and the other tending to the baby's needs.
In my mind these are both my jobs. Guiding you through your birth, encouraging you and supporting you to the best of my ability and, as you welcome your child to the world, gently assist you in those first essential moments of motherhood.
"It takes a village" they say about child rearing. In my mind it is about childbearing in general. From the sound / flicker of a heartbeat and from then on

מי שנכנס אדר מרבים בשמחה.
This week, my dear mother asked me if I wanted to go on a walk. (I prefer shopping)
We walked up this hill near us. I am so glad I went because, the experience and impact it had on me, inspired this post.
It is well known that the Lubaviture Rebbe, (of blessed memory) was against the overuse of ultrasound during pregnancy. I read that the original reason was because he was unsure of the safety of ultrasound at the time. Another aspect and interpratation of this pertaining to this post, is because the Rebbe was concerned about the equilibrium and inner well being of the mother. In other words, The Rebbe knew that the mother's calm, happiness and wellbeing had/ has a direct effect on her unborn child.
As I walked on this beautiful hill, I thought of the Rebbe and how he urged women to be especially careful (in more ways than one) during pregnancy to ensure their wellbeing.
I encourage you to do that.
Enjoy the beautiful weather, the wildflower season, a rainbow and our Holy Land. Let them fill your eyes, heart and mind with all the blessings and happiness surrounding you. This is your season and your moment to soak up beauty and happiness it will have positive effect on every fiber of your beings.

** I remember hearing this as a young girl. I could not find an official recording of this.

Today I accompanied a client on a tour of St. Joseph's Hospital in Jerusalem. It was a very special experience for two reasons. Firstly, this unique hospital has a great reputation as a small but fully equipped maternity unit, with all the facilities and professional staff necessary for a safe and comfortable birth.
The labor unit has a ratio of 4 midwives to 5 rooms. They facilitate and support you in any birth you choose, from water births to epidural births to c-sections (when necessary). Every room is equipped with a private shower and toilet. Laboring moms can use a wireless monitor, allowing freedom of movement as labor proceeds. The hospital has a calm, quiet and professional feel and is a popular choice for expectant mothers who want to give birth in a comfortable atmosphere with a lot of personal and professional support.

The second reason that the visit to St. Joseph's was special was that we had the opportunity to meet Sister Valentina, the head midwife there. She is well known all over Israel for her warm and generous personality. She has such a great energy to her. She has a well-deserved reputation as being calm, professional, welcoming, respectful and accommodating to all her patients without reserve. I really enjoyed this tour and look forward to accompanying women during their births at St. Joseph's. Contact me if you’d like to find out more about St. Joseph’s and how I can help you have a positive birth experience.
