We recently had the privilege of working on a remarkable touching case involving a male patient in his 40s, who had undergone surgery 13 years ago for the removal of a sarcoma in his back. At that time, a vertebral fixation was performed, and a shelf implant was used to provide support. Since then, there had been no evidence of recurrence.

However, a couple of months ago, the previous fixation failed and collapsed, causing significant complications. After imaging and testing, a hardware failure was diagnosed, and another surgery was needed.

The precise spine surgery was led by Dr. Gilad Regev, a highly skilled spine surgeon at Tel Aviv Medical Center, who specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr. Regev initiated a collaboration with Levin Center of Surgical Innovation & 3D Printing and Dr. Solomon Dadia to plan a customized implant tailored precisely to the patient's anatomy, offering the support needed for a successful recovery.

Our team worked closely with Dr. Regev to create a 3D model of the patient's spine with the collapsed fixation. This model helped design a custom 3D titanium implant, featuring a lattice structure to encourage bone integration, as well as precisely planned screw placements to guide the surgeon during the operation. The implant was printed using advanced 3D technology and supplied by Sharon Tuvia ltd.

The surgery was a great success, and we are thrilled to see the patient on his way to recovery, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the medical team. We wish him a smooth recovery and many years of health and happiness.

An Inspiring Recovery Journey Enabled by Medical Innovation

A 48-year-old patient, who suffered a severe car accident, faced a complex fracture in the articular surface of his knee. After undergoing fixation in the winter of 2023, which unfortunately did not heal properly, the condition worsened with an infectious process in the joint. This required a comprehensive treatment plan, starting with the removal of the affected area and the creation of a custom solution.
The bone cement procedure was meticulously planned by the 3D team at Tel Aviv Medical Center, led by Dr. Solomon Dadia. The team designed an innovative template to fill the missing bone, incorporating a personalized nail during the surgery performed by Prof. Amal Khoury and Dr. Dadia. Following recovery, the patient underwent arthrodesis surgery with a custom implant.
Thanks to precise planning and dedicated care, the surgery was successful, and the patient’s condition is improving significantly.
This remarkable case highlights how the combination of cutting-edge technology and personalised care lead to success.

A Fascinating Story of Innovative Treatment for an Endangered Animal 🦅

At the Ramat Gan Safari Wildlife Hospital, a golden eagle suffering from a leg deformity caused by trauma recently received exceptional care. This golden eagle, a rare bird of prey facing the threat of extinction, underwent a highly complex and dedicated treatment as part of the commitment to its conservation.
Treating the eagle posed significant challenges due to the unique structure and weight of its bones, which made standard plates unsuitable. Additionally, its damaged tendons required meticulous attention and creative solutions. Dr. Matan Or, an orthopedic veterinary surgeon, approached us to prepare for the complex surgery. Together with Ronnie Gabay Chen, a medical designer and head of the veterinary field, a personalized solution was developed.
During the surgery, performed at the Ramat Gan Safari Wildlife Hospital with the collaboration of veterinarians and caretakers, unique 3D-printed tools were used. Anatomical models simulating the eagle’s leg were also created, enabling Dr. Or to perform precise cuts and drills with maximum efficiency.

The combined efforts of various teams facilitated advanced and innovative treatment for the eagle. We are proud to contribute to the conservation of endangered species by employing creative approaches to enhance treatment possibilities for the wildlife brought to the hospital.

Introducing an Innovative 3D Model for Understanding Cloaca in Infant Girls 👩🏽‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️

We’ve developed a 3D model to help explain cloaca in infant girls — a rare condition where the urinary, ge***al, and digestive tracts merge into a single exit. This model is a valuable tool for both surgical preparation and patient education.

For surgeons, it offers a clear representation of the complex anatomy, aiding in preoperative planning and improving confidence in the operating room. It also helps parents understand the condition and surgical process, creating trust and clarity.

The model also provides significant educational benefits, allowing medical teams and students to grasp the anatomy’s complexity, enhancing training and collaboration.

The model was ceated using segmentation from several MRI scans, using Materialise CAD software, and printed with using Stratasys J750 3D printer, which works by layering multiple materials simultaneously.

Highly detailed, each organ labeled and structures that can be disassembled for deeper insight.

Led by Dr. Inbal Samuk, an innovative pediatric colorectal surgeon at Schneider Children’s Medical Center, this project showcases the potential of 3D printing in personalized medicine.

At Beilinson Hospital, we frequently plan cranioplasty surgeries in collaboration with Dr. Idan Levitan , where part of the skull bone is replaced with a custom-made bone cement implant. This implant is created using a 3D-printed mold, which is specifically designed to match the patient's individual bone defect.

Recently, we have implemented a process for tumor surgery where at the end of the surgery a cranioplasty is needed, by incorporating a new navigated cutting jig. The purpose of these jigs is to precisely guide the surgeon in cutting the skull to the exact shape needed for the implant. These jigs are custom-designed for each patient’s anatomy and are planned virtually in collaboration with the surgeon. They are designed to mark the exact cutting location on the anatomy, ensuring maximum precision during surgery.

Following the creation of the cutting jig, a custom implant is produced to fill the defect. However, due to the complex anatomical shape of the skull, it is challenging to create a jig that perfectly fits the anatomy. Often, a jig may fit in several places, making it difficult to achieve the desired precision.

Together with Dr. Idan Levitan we developed a concept to synchronize the jig with an existing navigation system from Brainlab & Medtronic . We created a jig with designated points for probe positioning, known as fiducials. Fiducials are small reference points, often in the form of small donut-shaped markers, which are attached to the patient's head and scanned before the procedure. These fiducials are also represented in the 3D files uploaded to the navigation system, helping to register the patient’s anatomy and allowing the surgeon to see the exact location of the cutting points in real time during surgery.

By synchronizing the jig with the navigation system, we have achieved a highly accurate cutting process, ensuring a precise cut and a perfectly fitting implant.

To date, we have successfully performed nearly ten such procedures at Beilinson Hospital, demonstrating the effectiveness and precision of this enhanced approach.
