I'm happy to share the success of our recent Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery Symposium at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. Despite the challenging times our nation faces, this event showcased the commitment of our medical community to advance our field and improve patient outcomes.

The symposium brought together a diverse group of doctors from across Israel—ranging from Be’er-Sheva to Naharia, and including Druze, Muslim, Jewish, and Christian professionals. It was a testament to the unity and collaborative spirit that define our healthcare system.
We explored the technical challenges in liver, pancreas, and bile duct surgeries through a series of interesting presentations.
Junior surgeons presented their challenging cases, while senior department chairs shared their invaluable insights.

I'm particularly proud of our resident, Dr. Dana Peleg, for her outstanding presentation on our work. Her dedication and skill are a testament to the future of HPB surgery in Israel.
She was supervised by Dr. Omri Sulimani, a leading authority on Complex HPB Surgeries at בית חולים בילינסון . His contribution embodies the spirit of innovation and excellence that drives our field forward.

This symposium serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit can shine through. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of medicine and to provide hope for our patients and communities.

Just got back from an amazing conference - the 3rd Israeli Conference on Interventional Oncology! Big thanks to Prof. Eli Atar (President of the Israeli Society of Interventional Radiology), Dr. Gabriel Bartal, and Dr. Michal Mauda-Havakuk for putting on such a great event. Docs from all different specialties coming together - that's how we move medicine forward⚕️

Just like the teamwork it takes to make those delicious Shavuot meals, collaboration between specialists is key. At Beilinson hospital בית חולים בילינסון, our interventional radiologist, radiologists, and other amazing teams work together seamlessly to give our patients the best possible care. This conference was a fantastic chance to share ideas and push the boundaries of what's possible in our field.

Today's Israeli Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (ILHPBA) one-day symposium at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv was a powerful reminder of the unifying force of medicine. While our region faces immense challenges, it was truly inspiring to witness the diversity and coexistence that thrives within the Israeli healthcare system.

ILHPBA members gathered from across the country – north to south – representing a beautiful tapestry of Israeli society. Christians, Muslims, Druze, and Jews, residents and department chairs, all came together with a shared purpose: to advance patient care and illuminate the path forward in the often-troubled Middle East.

This spirit of collaboration extends beyond ethnicity and religion. It's noteworthy that Clalit Health Services יחד בכללית, the world's second-largest HMO, boasts a workforce comprised of 72% women, with a staggering 68% of leadership positions, including hospital CEOs, held by women.

This symposium served as a beacon of hope, showcasing the dedication and talent that flourishes within Israeli healthcare. Despite the current conflicts, we remain committed to shining a light of humanity in our region ⚕️‍⚕️

Shavua Tov from Nigeria!

The 1st expedition of the Israeli-Nigerian Liver-Pancreas-Bile Duct Collaboration project is underway!

Myself and Dr. Michael Gurevitch (world-renowned HPB & transplant surgeon), flew from Israel to Lagos and drove to Ife, where we were met with incredible hospitality from Professor Olusegun Alatise at Obafemi Awolowo University Hospital.

This morning, we successfully completed the first surgery - a complex procedure on a 16-year-old girl with a bile duct obstruction caused by a tumor.
We have two more challenging pancreatic cancer surgeries ahead, involving major blood vessel reconstruction.

A huge thank you to Professor Olusegun Alatise and Professor John Akintunde Okeniyi for hosting us and making this impactful collaboration possible. This will undoubtedly lead to a brighter future for our patients.

We'd also like to express our gratitude to Ambassador Michael Freeman of the Israeli Embassy in Nigeria for his support.

פרופ׳ ערן שדות, מומחה בכירורגיה כללית, ניתוחי כבד, לבלב, ודרכי מרה - מספר לנו על ניתוח מורכב שביצע ברפאל: גבר בן 52, אובחן עם גרורות כבדיות ממקור סרטן מעי גס "המטופל, שהיה בריא לחלוטין עד לפני ארבעה חודשים, החל לחוות יציאות מעורבות בדם ועצירות חדשה", הוא מספר. "לאחר סדרת בדיקות שעבר בביה״ח רפאל, הופנה המטופל לביצוע קולונוסקופיה שאישרה את החשש: גידול סרטני במעי הגס. בדיקת CT העלתה ממצאים קשים עוד יותר: הגידול שלח חמש גרורות לשתי אונות הכבד".

״בהתייעצות המומחים של רפאל לגידולים של מערכת העיכול והכבד, ואני ביניהם - החלטנו שעל אף המצב המורכב, ישנו סיכוי שניתוח יוכל להביא לריפוי החולה״. תוכנית הטיפול שנקבעה כללה שלושה טיפולים כימותרפיים מקדימים, ולאחריהם - ניתוח מורכב להסרת הגרורות מהכבד. הניתוח בוצע על ידי צוות מיומן של מנתחים, מרדימים, אחים ואחיות - כולם בעלי ניסיון רב בתחום ניתוחי כבד. "במהלך הניתוח, נעשה שימוש בטכנולוגיות מתקדמות המאפשרות זיהוי מדויק של הגידולים והסרתם באופן בטוח ויעיל", מסביר הפרופ'׳.

לשמחתם של הצוות הרפואי ושל המטופל, המטופל התאושש מהניתוח וכבר אחרי ארבעה ימים בלבד שוחרר לביתו. נאחל לו בריאות איתנה!

לא פעם אנחנו נתקלים במקרים רפואיים מורכבים, שהטיפול בהם כרוך, באופן בלתי נמנע, בסיכון לפתח סיבוכים, וקושי– גם למטופלים וגם לנו.

אז בשמי ובשם מטופלים רבים שלנו בבלינסון - אני רוצה להודות לכל אחת ואחד מהצוות שלנו ב- Rabin Medical Center (Beilinson) על העבודה האיכותית שאנחנו עושים !
