✨When treating brain metastases there is no place for a “wait and see” approach. From the very beginning therapy must be precise, effective and focused on preserving neurological function and the patient’s quality of life.
We congratulate the Radiotherapy Institute research team on receiving the Elrov Digital Health Grant for the development of an innovative artificial intelligence–based system for personalized radiotherapy planning. The solution integrates data from radiotherapy plans, MRI and CT imaging, clinical information and molecular pathology increasing treatment accuracy while minimizing exposure to healthy tissues.
The project is carried out by a multidisciplinary team including Dr. Orit Forman, Dr. Lior Tzah and Natan Strauss in collaboration with Professor Raja Giryes and Professor Noam Ben-Eliezer from Tel Aviv University.

✨For the first time in Israel, an innovative ankle reconstruction procedure was performed at Ichilov Medical Center (Tel Aviv) on a young patient who sustained a severe injury in an electric scooter accident.
The damage to the talus bone was so rare and complex that no existing implant was available for such a case. The medical team made a bold decision to develop a customized solution in collaboration with the Levin Center for Surgical Innovation.
A personalized 3D-printed titanium implant was designed and produced specifically for the patient. The implant replaced a significant bone defect, promoted natural bone growth and allowed partial preservation of ankle mobility.
In similar injuries, the standard approach has traditionally involved complete immobilization of the ankle, significantly limiting the patient’s mobility. In this case, Dr. Assaf Albagli and Dr. Shlomo Dadia at Ichilov successfully preserved joint function and partial movement.

🩺Shirley, 53, underwent a long and challenging treatment journey for breast cancer including a bilateral mastectomy, extensive radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. During her recovery an extremely rare complication was discovered - a metastasis to the sternum indicating an advanced and complex stage of the disease. Repeated radiation sessions led to necrosis of the bone and a severe infection posing a direct threat to her life.
The only possible solution was a multi-stage and technically complex surgery: removal of the affected sternum and adjacent ribs, followed by complete reconstruction of the chest wall. The procedure involved specialists from thoracic surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedics and the Surgical Innovation Center. Precise 3D models were created to determine the extent of resection and plan the optimal reconstruction strategy.
After removing the infected areas plastic surgeons transplanted skin and fat tissue from the abdominal region preserving their blood supply and reconnected the vessels to the transplanted tissue using microsurgical techniques. The chest wall was fully reconstructed with a titanium structure ensuring stability and proper lung function.
The use of 3D technology was a key factor in the successful outcome - it improved surgical precision, preserved vital structures and reduced risks. Today, Shirley is recovering well. ✨ In January 2025 a 10-year-old boy underwent a successful operation at the Levin Center at Ichilov after being diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma of the ulna. In similar cases worldwide, patients often face the difficult choice between amputation or procedures that significantly limit arm function.
The National Unit for Orthopedic Oncology at Ichilov, together with the Levin Center team, developed an innovative surgical plan combining advanced 3D planning with a custom-made titanium implant. This approach allowed surgeons to fully preserve the anatomical structure of the forearm and maintain proper joint mobility.
The procedure included wide tumor resection using 3D-printed surgical guides, followed by reconstruction of the ulna with a personalized titanium implant. Pathological analysis confirmed complete tumor removal with clear margins.
Eight months after the surgery the child retained full range of motion, and follow-up examinations showed no signs of disease.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Dadia and Dr. Gortzak. The implant was designed by Merav Asherian and printed by Tuvia Sharon Ltd.
