Always an enriching experience to spend a few hours with kids while taking a good look at their eyes! Refractive error still is highly under diagnosed at an early age.
Glad to be able to spread awareness among pre school teachers and through them to the parents about the necessity or early age eye check ups.

PTERYGIUM Surgery is sometimes not seen as an ' ESSENTIAL ' surgery . Situation is made worse by the age old belief that ' it always recurs . so why to get operated '.
SKIP to present day , pterygium removal not just provides excellent cosmesis , it hardly ever recurs. And on top of it , in many cases it is a REFRACTIVE SURGERY as well!!
CASE IN POINT :
Close friend's father , 30 YEAR OLD PTERYGIUM , dense , deep stromal , almost reaching the pupillary margin.
Pre op Vision : 6/60.
Refraction : +5/-7 cyl.
Keratometry : highly variable between 54 & 65 D !!!

After sutureless , injection less , painless Pterygium removal with autograft :
Vision : 6/6p unaided ( 10 times improvement )
Refraction : +0.75 DS!!!

Comprehensive Ophthalmology Practice at its Finest!

Relative of a very close friend was referred for Left Eye sudden loss of Vision.( Vision was FINGER COUNTING CLOSE TO FACE).
Right Eye was completely blind already since many years.

Pt was diagnosed with CRVO + Cataract.
I gave 3 monthly injections of INTRAVITREAL Anti - VEGF s to the patient and the retinal swelling reduced beautifully ( as shown in the Image).
Pt was then operated for Left Eye cataract and an INTRAOCULAR Lena was placed.
Patients vision now has improved from FCCF to 6/12!!
Extremely Happy Patient , Proud friend and me , a satisfied Doctor :).

PRECIS 6 : " I have been diagnosed by the doc as having COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME (CVS) . what in the world is that!? "

- CVS is a consortium of symptoms that are caused as a direct result of excessive screen time on laptop / mobile .

- It can cause :
Headaches Tiredness of eyes
Burning of eyes Blurred vision
Neck pain! Shoulder Pain!

- It affects around 60% of people who use digital devices for more than 3-4 hours / day.

- It is NOT SIGHT THREATENING , but can cause significant visual and psychological discomfort.

"BUT WE CANT STOP USING DIGITAL DEVICES . ITS OUR PROFESSION".
- Agreed . So there are ways to mitigate the damage. Modification of lifestyle / the way you work being the most Important.

WHAT PEOPLE THINK / ARE MADE TO THINK :
* one machine is better than the other.

* final visual quality and recovery time vary between machines

FACTS ARE AS FOLLOWS :

*Technical specifications may differ between companies , but IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR SURGERY END RESULT.

*The only thing that matters is the quality of the SURGEON. His experience , his skills and his understanding of the dynamics of the machine , be it any.

* More expensive is NOT NECESSARILY better.
* Foreign machines are NOT NECESSARILY better.

PRECIS 4 :

" mujhe cataract hai aisa doctor ne bola hai. Urgently operation karva deta hoon . Nai to phat jaayega / patthar ho jaayega / bikhar jaayega ."

TRUTH :
Cataract or its surgery is almost NEVER an emergency . Urgency is advocated rarely in a very few specific cases .

DONT PANIC . DONT WORRY . Your cataract will not break or rupture or solidify on its own in a few days .

WHAT YOU CAN DO :
Check your vision . Check if you have any symptoms like
-increased glare / difficulty driving at night
- difficulty watching the TV
- seeing shadows around / in centre of your vision , etc.

GET YOUR RETINA EVALUATED TO RULE OUT OTHER CAUSES OF DECREASED VISION.

PRECIS 3:

" meri aankhen kabhi kabhi LAAL ho jaati hai . pain bhi hota hai. chemist se drops le leta hoon. theek ho jaata hai"

RED ALERT :
people feel relief from redness and pain as 99% of chemists give STEROID CONTAINING eye drops.! which cause more harm than good in the long term.

WHAT PEOPLE THINK:
* something must have gone in the eye
* ' dryness ' ho gayi hogi
* i must have rubbed the eyes a lot.

WHAT IT COULD BE :
*redness is a non specific symptom that has 5 subtypes and can be caused by more than 50 different eye diseases!!

Ranging from DRY EYE SYNDROME / ALLERGY / MEIBOMITIS / EPISCLERITIS to serious diseases like GLAUCOMA / UVEITIS / SCLERITIS and INFECTION / ULCERATION. !!!

and YES! treatment is different for each problem!

WHAT TO DO :
* ALWAYS consult an ophthalmologist in person.

PRECIS 2: -- " Jab bhi eye drop daalta hoon , aankh bandh karte hi bahar nikal jaata hai !! "

COMPLAINT : On putting drops in my eye , it seems all of it flows out . What am I doing wrong?

WHAT PATIENTS COMMONLY THINK :
* my technique of putting drops is wrong
* I wont close my eyes for a few minutes so that the drop stays.

WHAT IT IS :
* Commonly : ITS NORMAL for some part of the drop to flow on the cheeks / face because volume of 1 drop ( 35-45 micro litres) is more than the space available in the eye where you instill the drop ( 30 microlitres) !!

* Rarely : wrong instillation technique

DOES PUTTING MORE NUMBER OF DROPS HELP? :
* NO. Put ONLY 1 DROP. As anything more will anyways flow out.

WHAT DOES THE ATTACHED IMAGE DEPICT? :

* Correct technique of eye drop instillation.

STEP 1. Pull the lower lid down to create space.
STEP 2. Look in the opposite direction (upwards).
STEP 3. Gently press the bottle at a short distance from the eye so that the drop falls in the space thus created.
STEP 4. Close the eye for 30 seconds , blink 3-4 times and wipe off the eye and the face.
