TMJ pain and decreased mouth opening: When TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain is accompanied by difficulty (or decreased) in opening the mouth, it indicates that there may be serious problems in the joint. The causes may be the following:
Inflammation in the joint: Inflammation and stiffness can cause difficulty in opening the mouth.
Shifting of the connective disc: The articular disc (which acts as a cushion in the joint) in the TMJ can shift, causing pain and limited movement.
Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis: Degeneration or inflammation in the joint can cause difficulty in opening the mouth and pain.
Trauma or injury: When some type of injury or pressure occurs to the TMJ, the muscles may contract or the joint may function abnormally, causing difficulty in opening the mouth.
Lack of mouth opening (called "trismus") can affect everyday activities, such as eating, speaking and yawning.
