📌 Purpose of the Craig Test
• To measure femoral anteversion (the angle of femoral neck relative to femoral condyles).
• Helps assess torsional deformities of the femur which can present as:
• In-toeing gait in children/adolescents.
• Hip internal/external rotation abnormalities in adults.
• Screening before hip arthroscopy / joint replacement to anticipate abnormal femoral version.
⸻
📌 Patient Position
• Prone position (most standard).
• Knee flexed to 90°.
• Hip in neutral abduction/adduction.
⸻
📌 Examiner Technique
1. Palpate the greater trochanter of the femur with one hand.
2. With the other hand, passively internally and externally rotate the hip.
3. Find the position where the greater trochanter is most prominent laterally (i.e., parallel to exam table surface).
4. At this position, measure the angle between tibial shaft and vertical line (using goniometer or visual estimation).
⸻
📌 Interpretation
• Normal anteversion: ~ 8°–15° in adults.
• >15° internal rotation at neutral position → increased femoral anteversion.
•
