Dengue is well known name these days , it creates a horrific picture and a sense of fear in our mind when we hear the name "Dengue" because it can cost lives. Dengue is a mosquito - borne viral disease caused by dengue virus (DENV) and spread by the Aedes mosquito . other name of dengue is "Breakbone Fever" because of severe pain in joint and muscles.
Primary symptoms of dengue are -
Sudden Fever , joint and muscle pains , severe headache , pain behind the eyes ,Fatigue , Nausea ,Vomiting.
secondary symptoms which may appear after 3-4 days of dengue fever are -
Skin Rashes , Mild bleeding like bleeding gums/easy bruising may be there.
some complications of Dengue may be like -
Dengue heamorhagic fever , damage to lymph and blood vessels , bleeding from nose and gums due to low platelet count ,enlargement of Liver ,and failure of cuirculatory system and at last these symptomes may progress to massive bleeding, shock and death, this is called Dengue shock syndrome (DSS).
Diagnosis - Blood test for leukocyte, platelet & hematocrit are conducted to diagnose dengue fever and for assessment. Laboratory diagnosis of dengue is best made during the acute phase of the illness when dengue virus circulates in the blood and can be detected by assays to detect the
viral RNA genome or soluble antigens (i.e. NS1 antigen) or through serology.
Prevention - best way is to prevent bites by infected mosquitos use mosquitos repellants even if you are indoors, make sure your home free of mosquitos by shuting the doors and windows properly and they are free of holes or mosquito nets can be used.

To reduce the mosquito population, get rid of places where mosquitoes can breed. These include old tires, cans, or flower pots that collect rain. Regularly change the water in outdoor bird baths and pets' water dishes.
