FIVE EASY WAYS TO GET MAXIMUM BENEFIT FROM YOGA ,Dr.Hardik Bhatt,PT
Let's begin with a real example, A 64-year grand father 'A' developed back pain & morning stiffness. He went to a doctor and had an x-ray which showed age-related changes and weak bones (osteoporosis). He started doing yoga to cure back pain by watching famous baba on TV, he tried to raise his both legs in lying repeatedly and worsened his pain, his recent x-ray showed him developed collapse of one of the vertebrae !
Second case is of Grammy 'B' having a same age fall down from steps at temple, she also went to a doctor with pain. She had an X-ray which showed nothing to worry, it was just blunt trauma. The doctor also surprised as he might also have collapse of his vertebrae by such fall. And old age ladies have weaker bones.
The first case is seeking benefit from Yoga for illness while second one is regular yoga practitioner. The first case did what most of the people do, specially newly diagnosed with diabetes, thyroid or other diseases which are result of long-term Unhealthy lifestyle.
Remember Yoga was designed as a part of wellness regiment in ancient time but modern Gurus marketing it as a miracle medicine for various medical conditions.
Actually imagine when you were a child & you have been put to 3rd or 4th standard in school directly. Just like your former education yoga must be started from beginning level, and then progressed to higher level. The level of the beginning is according to your age, health, flexibility (that is important!) health issues, gender, lifestyle etc(it's best to consult your physio and let him decide your regime)
Unless you are healthy young individual avoid distance mode learning like our grand father A did!
Don't disappoint that yoga will not work for your preexisting illness, remember any form of physical activity including yoga is beneficial for many local, and systemic illnesses. Yoga also works well specially for Musculoskeletal and postural disorders. But just like your regular medicine it should be specific to your condition & should be in proper dose. It's better to consult physiotherapist or expert yoga teacher. My personal view is to prefer physio as they are movement scientists and have a deep knowledge about movement you do otherwise wrong movement patterns can cause damage rather than benefit. Physio will deign your regime in scientific way.
Here are five East ways to get maximum benefit from yoga.
1. Regularity :-Whatever you do even if you are doing Three or Four Asana only, do it regularly (at least Four or Five days a week) to get benefit. Irregular sessions gives no benefit specially if you are doing it for any illness.
2. Heathy lifestyle :-As spiritual growth is also one of the aspects of yoga if you are junk food lover, have an irregular work schedules, addictions (electronic gadgets included!) ,you may be disappointed by results despite regular yoga.
3. Starting from growing aged:- That is you should try to do for your children if you fill you are already late! It preserves our wellness and slow downs ageing process.
4. Have patience:- It may take few weeks for your expected results but have a faith and progress gradually.
5. Be in the touch with the expert:- You should learn initially under observation only and later on should be in touch with expert or your physiotherapist for progress.
So let's begin, As in the case of Grammy B it's more future investment, as early you start investing the maximum benefit you will get!
